Chicago’s West Side saw two women targeted in separate but connected sexual assaults at a CTA bus stop last week, prompting a judge to label the suspect a long-term menace to the community.[1]

Brazen Attacks in Broad Daylight

Last Tuesday, a 28-year-old woman finished her shift and headed to a bus stop in the 3500 block of West Roosevelt Road. She lowered her headphones and heard a man on a bicycle hurl a vulgar sexual remark her way. He pressed further, asking if she had a partner and declaring his desire for sex with her.

Despite her repeated demands to leave her alone, the man followed her into the bus shelter. He cornered her there, grabbed her private area over her clothing as she tried to slip past, and later slapped her buttocks. He even bent down, thrust his face near her private area, and stuck out his tongue in a mocking gesture after lowering his mask.[1]

Minutes later, a 22-year-old woman stepped off a nearby bus and bent down to tie her shoe. The same assailant rushed up from behind, placed his hand on her private area, and squeezed her buttocks forcefully.

Pursuit Through the Streets

Both victims spotted the man crossing the street on his bicycle and gave chase. A passing driver joined them in the pursuit. The suspect fell off his bike, scrambled into an alley, grabbed a bottle, and hurled it at the younger woman – it narrowly missed her.

He darted into another alley as the group dialed 911. Chicago police officers arrived shortly after and took him into custody. Surveillance footage from the area captured parts of the physical contacts, aiding investigators.[1]

Notably, officers had been stationed at a nearby Dunkin’ during the first assault. The initial victim waved for their attention twice, but they did not respond at the time.

A Judge’s Stark Assessment

In court, Cook County Judge Luciano Panici Jr. ordered the 39-year-old suspect, Deandre Smith, detained. The judge described him as having “terrorized the community over the past 15 years” and called him “a violent person who is randomly violent with people he does not know on the street.”[1]

Chicago Police Department records showed Smith accumulated 22 arrests since 2014. Prosecutors emphasized that he knew neither victim, underscoring the random nature of the violence.

Pattern of Random Street Violence

The incidents fit a troubling profile outlined by the judge. Smith targeted strangers in public during routine activities – walking to work or catching a bus. His use of a bicycle allowed quick approaches and escapes, heightening the sense of vulnerability for those in the area.

Community members on the West Side have long dealt with such unpredictable threats. This case highlights ongoing safety concerns at transit stops, where commuters expect protection rather than peril.

  • First assault: Vulgar remarks, stalking, grabbing, and slapping at the bus shelter.
  • Second assault: Surprise grope from behind moments later.
  • Pursuit: Involved victims, a Good Samaritan driver, and eventual police intervention.
  • Arrest history: 22 prior arrests since 2014, per police records.
  • Judicial ruling: Detention based on history of “terrorizing” the community.

Key Takeaways

  • Swift victim action and bystander help led to the quick arrest.
  • Judge’s comments reveal a decade-plus pattern of random violence.
  • Surveillance played a crucial role despite incomplete coverage.

Deandre Smith’s detention marks a temporary victory for the victims and neighborhood, but his extensive record raises questions about systemic responses to repeat offenders. Public transit hubs remain flashpoints for such crimes, urging greater vigilance from authorities and riders alike. What steps can communities take to prevent these attacks?
