Rotterdam, Netherlands – The MV Hondius eased into Europe’s largest port on Monday morning with only 25 crew members and two medical staff still aboard, its passengers having left the vessel days earlier on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Workers in white hazardous-material suits moved quickly onto the pier to begin preparations, while a row of white containers stood ready a short distance away between the windmills that line the waterfront. The arrival closed a difficult chapter for a ship that had already drawn the attention of health officials on several continents.

Arrival Under Strict Safety Measures

Port authorities had prepared the docking area with clear separation between the vessel and the surrounding city. The containers will serve as temporary quarantine housing for any crew members who cannot return home immediately. Officials emphasized that every step followed established Dutch public health rules designed to keep the virus contained.

Testing will begin right away for those still on board, followed by weekly checks throughout the isolation period. So far, none of the remaining crew have shown symptoms, according to local health director Yvonne van Duijnhoven. She noted that the protocols in place are intended to block any possible spread from the ship to the outside environment.

Decontamination Process and Next Steps

Once the last people leave the vessel, a full decontamination will begin using guidelines set by Dutch authorities. The work is expected to last about three days. After inspectors clear the ship, it will be allowed to resume operations.

The Dutch company that operates the MV Hondius has stated it sees no reason to alter its schedule. An Arctic cruise is still set to depart from Keflavik, Iceland, on May 29. This marks the first known hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship, a detail that has kept international health agencies closely involved.

Scale of the Outbreak and Confirmed Cases

Health officials have now recorded at least 11 cases linked to the ship, nine of them confirmed by the World Health Organization. Three passengers died during or after the voyage, including a Dutch couple believed to have been among the first exposed while traveling in South America. Separate groups of passengers and crew who left earlier are already under quarantine in the Netherlands after arriving on flights over the past two weeks.

In Canada, one of four citizens who had been in isolation tested positive on Sunday, and details are being shared with the World Health Organization. Eighteen Americans remain under observation at specialized U.S. facilities equipped for serious infectious diseases. A French passenger continues to receive intensive care in Paris, though hospital officials clarified that the patient is not currently using an artificial-lung system, despite an earlier report suggesting otherwise. The condition remains serious enough that such support could still become necessary.

France’s Pasteur Institute completed genetic sequencing of the Andes virus strain found in one passenger. The results matched viruses already circulating in South America, with no signs yet of changes that would increase transmissibility or severity.

Public Health Perspective and Ongoing Monitoring

Van Duijnhoven stressed that the risk to the general public stays very low because of the layered precautions now in effect. The port’s harbormaster, René de Vries, said the decision to accept the vessel was straightforward given Rotterdam’s size and capabilities. “I think it’s unacceptable to say no, you’re not welcome in the biggest port of Europe,” he told reporters.

Authorities will continue to watch the situation closely even after the ship is cleaned. Regular inspections will determine when the vessel can sail again without restrictions.

What matters now

  • Crew members remain symptom-free and will undergo repeated testing during quarantine.
  • Decontamination follows strict Dutch guidelines and should finish within three days.
  • International health agencies continue to track cases and share data on the virus strain.
  • The next scheduled cruise remains on track for late May.

The episode has shown how quickly a rare virus can affect travelers far from its usual range, yet it has also demonstrated the value of coordinated port and health responses when clear protocols are followed from the start.
