How Box Office Numbers Are Counted Over an Opening Weekend

The number you see in a Sunday headline looks like a final score. It isn’t one, and that’s built into how the industry works.

An opening weekend total goes through several stages, and each stage uses a different kind of data. Some of it is counted, some is projected, and some is corrected a day later.

Many big releases begin with Thursday evening previews. Trackers fold those preview grosses into Friday’s reported total, so the opening day figure includes money earned the night before.

That’s a big reason an opening Friday can look huge next to the Saturday that follows it. A “three day weekend” is therefore partly a Thursday night story too.

Friday and Saturday are the firm part of the count. Those portions are actual receipts reported up from theater circuits. They still arrive as early reports, though, and they can be adjusted later.

Together they make up about two thirds of the weekend. The last third is the day that hasn’t finished yet.

Where the Sunday Number Comes From

Sunday’s figure is a guess made while the day is still going. The Sunday estimate itself comes from the studio being estimated, not from Comscore. Each distributor reports on its own films.

The forecast isn’t random. It’s built from historical data patterns, meaning the day of week decay curves seen across comparable titles. If a film’s audience doesn’t behave like its comparison set, the projection misses in whichever direction the audience went.

The Usual Sunday Drop

Studios lean on a familiar pattern when they project Sunday. School and work resume Monday, so ticket sales typically fall roughly a quarter to a third from Saturday to Sunday.

That pattern is steady enough to make forecasting workable. Family films, fan driven titles and holiday releases can still break it.

The timing is fairly fixed. Studios report estimated Friday and Saturday grosses plus a Sunday projection, and that estimate is generally released between 9 and 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Sunday.

The estimate usually covers more than just the top film. It typically includes at least the top twelve films, and Box Office Mojo fills out the rest of the chart with its own projections.

Comscore and the Theater Data Behind It

Behind the chart is a data firm most moviegoers never hear about. Comscore aggregates the distributors’ numbers into the weekend chart that the whole industry treats as the scoreboard.

Its reach is wide, though not complete. By Comscore’s own description, the feed covers roughly ninety nine percent of US and Canada screens and about ninety five percent of the global box office. Some smaller theaters report late or get extrapolated.

Monday Actuals Replace the Estimate

The correction comes about a day later. Box Office Mojo’s guide states that actual weekend receipts are reported Monday, generally after 1 p.m. Pacific Time. At that point the real Sunday number replaces the projection.

The change is often small. The two figures typically land within a few percentage points of each other. Late reporting theaters can also trigger a further revision Monday night or later in the week.

Why Estimates Tend to Run High

The gap isn’t evenly split between over and under. A Stanford Graduate School of Business analysis of 1,064 wide releases from 2003 to 2010 found Sunday estimates overstated actual weekend grosses by an average of about six percent, with the inflation highest on a film’s first weekend. That research is older, but it’s still the most cited study of the issue.

The study also tied the bias to competition. The gap widened as the stakes rose, so a tight and publicized race tended to produce hotter projections. One extreme example was the animated film Delgo, which reported a Sunday estimate of $568,240 and then an actual of $164,160 on Monday.

Headlines can disagree without anyone being wrong. One outlet may cite the Sunday estimate for a three day window, another the four day holiday figure, a third the Monday actual.

Studios can also change how much they share. For Tenet in September 2020, Warner Bros. supplied only weekend totals on Sundays, followed by the standard Monday actuals, and blocked rivals from seeing day by day figures. Sony followed a lesser version of that approach, while other distributors kept to traditional reporting protocols. When you read a number, check which window it covers and whether it’s the Sunday estimate or the Monday actual.
