Some faces never got top billing, yet you’d know them anywhere. They showed up as the sheriff, the neighbor, the nervous lawyer or the guy who sold the hero a car. You may not have known their names, but you knew exactly who they were.

This list is a gallery of ten of those familiar performers, drawn from decades of film. I’ve stuck to career facts that are well documented and avoided guessing at anything recent. Some of these actors are still working, and some have passed away.

1. Steve Buscemi

Buscemi’s wiry, expressive look made him a fixture of independent cinema from the late 1980s onward. He stood out in Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Pink and in Fargo as the fidgety kidnapper Carl Showalter. He also became a regular in Coen brothers films.

Beyond acting, he directed episodes of television and starred as Nucky Thompson in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He also voiced Randall in Monsters, Inc. Few actors move so easily between menace and comedy.

2. J.K. Simmons

For many viewers, Simmons is the commanding voice and stern face who could turn up in almost anything. He played editor J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films and later returned to the role in the Marvel universe. He also appeared in Juno as the supportive father.

His breakthrough into major awards came with Whiplash, where he played the ferocious music teacher Terence Fletcher. That performance won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It remains the defining example of a character actor being given a role to own.

3. Stephen Root

Root is one of those actors whose voice you may know before his face. He played the mumbling Milton in Office Space, a role that became a quotable favorite for a generation of office workers. On television, he was Jimmy James on NewsRadio.

He has also done extensive voice work, including Bill Dauterive on King of the Hill. Later dramatic roles, such as Monroe Fuches on Barry, showed a darker side. That range is why his name keeps surfacing on cast lists.

4. Michael Gambon

Gambon, who died in September 2023, was a giant of British stage and screen. Younger audiences knew him as Albus Dumbledore, taking over the role in the Harry Potter series after Richard Harris died. He played the wizard from Prisoner of Azkaban through the final films.

He also had a long career in serious drama, including Gosford Park and The King’s Speech. On stage he was celebrated for productions of Alan Ayckbourn and Harold Pinter. He was knighted in 1998.

5. Bill Paxton

Paxton, who died in 2017, seemed to be in every kind of movie. He played the hapless Private Hudson in Aliens, whose panicked outbursts became famous. He also appeared in Apollo 13, Titanic and Twister.

He later starred in HBO’s Big Love as polygamist Bill Henrickson. He also directed the film Frailty in 2001. Fans still remember him as a warm, slightly wild presence on screen.

6. Richard Jenkins

Jenkins spent years as a dependable supporting player before earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for The Visitor in 2008. Earlier, he played the deceased patriarch Nathaniel Fisher on Six Feet Under. He was also memorable in Step Brothers as the exasperated father.

He later returned to awards attention with The Shape of Water, which brought a Best Supporting Actor nomination. His quiet, weary style suits stories where small moments matter most. Directors seem to trust him with almost anything.

7. Alfred Molina

Molina has been a working actor since the early 1980s, appearing in Raiders of the Lost Ark in its opening sequence as the treacherous Satipo. Many others remember him as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2. He reprised that role in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

He also worked in Boogie Nights, Frida and Chocolat. On television, he has appeared in shows such as Feud: Bette and Joan. His British roots and versatile accent work help him disappear into characters.

8. Jeffrey Tambor

Tambor’s career stretches from The Larry Sanders Show to Arrested Development, where he played both George Bluth Sr. and Oscar. He was also known for roles in Hellzapoppin’ style comedies and in films like Meet the Parents. He won an Emmy for Transparent in 2015.

His later career was affected by allegations of misconduct on the set of Transparent, which led to his departure from that series. He has continued to take smaller parts since. His earlier work remains widely rewatched.

9. Kathy Bates

Bates made her mark with Misery, playing the obsessive fan Annie Wilkes, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She built a long career on strong supporting parts in films like Fried Green Tomatoes, Titanic and The Waterboy. Her television work includes Harry’s Law and American Horror Story.

She also starred in the CBS series Matlock in 2024, a reboot of the classic legal drama. The show was renewed for a second season. It suggests that a character actor can find a starring vehicle later in a long career.

10. Danny Trejo

Trejo’s weathered face and imposing presence made him a fixture in action cinema. He came to wide notice in Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, both from the 1990s. Robert Rodriguez, a cousin by association, later cast him as Machete in a film series.

He has appeared in hundreds of credits across film, television and games. Off screen, he is known for his work with recovery programs and for opening a chain of taco restaurants. His path from prison to Hollywood is a well documented part of his story.

None of these ten needed a leading role to become part of your movie memories. They lived in the corners of the frame, and somehow that was enough.
