Las Vegas – Retired NBA champion Lamar Odom checked into a rehabilitation center this week following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence earlier this month.[1][2]

High-Speed Stop Triggers Turning Point

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers pulled Odom over on January 17 after clocking his SUV exceeding 100 mph on Interstate 15.[2] Officers detected a strong marijuana odor from the vehicle and observed bloodshot eyes on both Odom and his passenger. Odom first denied recent use but later admitted to smoking marijuana that day.

Field sobriety tests revealed signs of impairment, including balance problems and eyelid tremors. Authorities booked him on three charges: first-offense DUI, speeding more than 41 mph over the limit, and failure to maintain lane. The incident prompted Odom to reflect deeply on his habits.[2]

Proactive Step Toward Sobriety

Odom entered a 30-day program at iRely Recovery in Los Angeles, a facility offering holistic care including detox, therapy, and aftercare.[3] His manager, Gina Rodriguez, confirmed the decision stemmed from concerns over marijuana use potentially leading to harder substances. “Odom decided to seek treatment specifically for marijuana use out of concern it could lead to a relapse into harder, more dangerous drugs,” she told People.[3]

Rodriguez described the move as a personal choice to reset and prioritize health. Odom initially stated that alcohol or narcotics played no role in the arrest. This step marks his commitment to long-term recovery amid ongoing legal proceedings.[2]

A Familiar Battle with Addiction

Odom’s challenges with substance abuse date back years. In 2013, he faced a prior DUI charge in California, pleading no contest and receiving probation plus alcohol treatment.[4] Two years later, a near-fatal overdose at a Nevada brothel left him in a coma, with his then-wife Khloé Kardashian pausing divorce proceedings to aid his recovery.

• 2013: DUI arrest and plea deal with probation.
• 2015: Overdose incident requiring extended hospitalization.
• 2021: Public discussion of ketamine therapy for sobriety maintenance.
• 2026: Current rehab entry post-DUI.

These events highlight a pattern Odom now seeks to break definitively. Supporters note his openness about recovery as a strength in this journey.[5]

Court Date Looms as Recovery Begins

Odom faces a court appearance on March 17 in Nevada to address the charges. His team expressed gratitude for public support and optimism about his progress. The iRely program emphasizes personalized plans addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

While details of his daily routine remain private, the structured environment aims to equip him with tools for sustained sobriety. Observers view this as a positive development, especially given his history of advocacy for recovery.

Odom’s choice underscores the power of proactive intervention in the face of adversity, offering hope for others navigating similar paths. What do you think about his commitment to recovery? Share in the comments.
