Las Vegas — Motorists endured years of detours and delays at the bustling I-15/Tropicana Avenue interchange, a vital gateway to the Strip. The massive reconstruction effort transformed that bottleneck into a smoother, future-ready hub. Now, the project has garnered prestigious national acclaim for its execution and innovation.[1][2]

A Monumental Upgrade for a Busy Corridor

The I-15/Tropicana project rebuilt a 60-year-old bridge over the interstate. Crews demolished and reconstructed it in phases, raising its height, adding lanes, and widening sidewalks to 10 feet along Tropicana Avenue. They also introduced new high-occupancy vehicle ramps at nearby Harmon Avenue and reconfigured Dean Martin Drive for better flow.

Workers added Joey Bishop Drive to ease traffic during major events. The design featured a three-level tight diamond interchange and a new flyover linking southbound I-15 to eastbound Tropicana. These changes positioned the interchange to handle up to 300,000 vehicles daily, serving resorts, T-Mobile Arena, Allegiant Stadium, and the Athletics’ planned ballpark.[3]

Overcoming Disruptions in a High-Stakes Environment

Construction began in 2022 and wrapped up after 3.5 years, with a ribbon-cutting in September 2025. The Nevada Department of Transportation awarded the design-build contract to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. in November 2021 for an initial $305 million, though the total reached $382 million.[1]

Lane reductions, weekend full closures of I-15, and Tropicana shutdowns tested drivers’ patience. Teams demolished part of the flyover and half the bridge over I-15 in an intense eight-day window. Despite these hurdles, Kiewit deployed 700 workers who poured 54,000 cubic yards of concrete and laid 300,000 square yards of asphalt. They installed over 140 signs and upgraded more than two miles of sidewalks.[3]

Innovation Shines Through Major Events

The project coincided with high-profile spectacles like Super Bowl LVIII and multiple Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix races. Planners met firm deadlines tied to these events while delivering ahead of schedule. Innovative design solutions helped save $23 million.[2]

A temporary diverging diamond interchange eased some flows during peak work. The effort modernized a critical corridor linking the Strip to employment centers. Federal funding, including a $50 million grant from 2020, supported the initiative alongside state resources.[1]

National Spotlight from AGC’s Elite Honors

The Associated General Contractors of America named the project one of 2025’s most significant construction achievements. Kiewit secured the Baldwin Group Build America Award in the design-build civil category, among the industry’s highest honors. AGC President Todd Roberts praised the team’s expertise and determination.

“Completing projects of this scale and complexity requires remarkable expertise, teamwork and determination,” Roberts stated. “This award honors the construction professionals whose dedication and skill made this project a success.”[1] NDOT Director Tracy Larkin Thomason highlighted the collaboration. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our team and partners who delivered a project that will have a lasting impact,” she said.

Key Takeaways

  • Saved $23 million and finished ahead of schedule despite event deadlines.
  • Rebuilt bridge with added capacity for 300,000 daily vehicles.
  • Design-build approach minimized right-of-way needs and boosted efficiency.

The I-15/Tropicana success story underscores how perseverance turns infrastructure headaches into enduring assets for Las Vegas. Travelers now enjoy reliable access to the city’s economic engines. What impact have you noticed on your daily commute? Share in the comments.
