North Bay Village – Police took a 24-year-old man into custody on Monday after he allegedly exploited a former friend’s personal details to acquire an insurance policy. The victim stumbled upon the fraud earlier this year while seeking his own coverage from Progressive Insurance. Investigators traced the scheme back to Bolton Ahimbisibwe, who now faces potential charges as the case moves forward.

The Victim’s Shocking Discovery

The trouble began in late January when the victim attempted to sign up for a new policy. An agent alerted him to an existing account balance of $349, even though he insisted he had never done business with the company before. The policy listed his name, his wife’s name, and Ahimbisibwe’s name as participants.

Recognizing Ahimbisibwe as an old acquaintance he had lost touch with, the victim reached out directly. He made it clear to police that he had granted no permission for the use of his information. This revelation prompted a formal report and launched the official probe.

Building the Case Through Surveillance

Officers assigned the matter for follow-up on January 12. The victim provided key leads, including repeated sightings of Ahimbisibwe’s vehicle at 1275 Kennedy Causeway. These observations helped narrow down the suspect’s location over the ensuing months.

Investigators verified the details and prepared to act. The combination of the victim’s account and physical evidence pointed squarely at Ahimbisibwe. Patience in gathering intelligence proved crucial to the eventual confrontation.

Key Timeline:

  • Jan. 12: Case assigned for investigation.
  • Jan. 28: Victim reports fraud to police.
  • May 4: Arrest at Kennedy Causeway address.

Swift Arrest and Initial Processing

On May 4, officers arrived at the Kennedy Causeway address and spotted the vehicle in question. They took Ahimbisibwe into custody around 8:18 a.m. and brought him to the North Bay Village Police Department.

After receiving his Miranda rights, he chose not to answer questions without legal counsel. A background check uncovered two outstanding bench warrants – one for a speed zone violation and another for an unregistered vessel. Personnel then transferred him to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without further incident.

Pending Charges and Ongoing Review

Prosecutors now hold the identity theft file for review. The case underscores how personal data can surface in unexpected financial contexts, such as insurance applications. Victims in similar situations often face hurdles like disputed debts before resolution.

Authorities emphasized the importance of monitoring credit and accounts closely. This arrest serves as a reminder of the legal consequences tied to unauthorized use of others’ information. The full scope of charges will become clear once the state attorney’s office weighs in.
