Decatur, Georgia – A routine lunch at a neighborhood restaurant took a sudden and violent turn Tuesday afternoon when a stranger walked up to a woman seated at her table and stabbed her in the back. The attack occurred inside the First Watch location on Blackmon Drive, a spot known for its breakfast and brunch service. Authorities said the woman had no prior connection to the man who approached her.
What Happened at the Restaurant
The incident unfolded shortly after 12:40 p.m. The woman was seated and eating when the man came directly to her table and plunged a knife into her back, according to DeKalb County police. She managed to leave the restaurant on her own and reached a nearby business, where she called for help.
Emergency responders took her to a local hospital. Officers reported that her injuries did not appear life-threatening. The restaurant remained open while police secured the scene and began interviewing witnesses.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
Police arrested 22-year-old Walter Scrutchings at the restaurant. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault. No court date has been set yet, and investigators have not released additional details about what may have prompted the attack.
Authorities described the suspect as a complete stranger to the victim. The case remains under active investigation by DeKalb County police.
Residents React to the Violence
The stabbing surprised many in the area, which locals have long viewed as safe and walkable. Charlie Cote, who has lived nearby for most of his life, told WAGA that he takes the community’s safety for granted.
“I’ve lived here most of my life and I kind of take for granted that it’s a safe, pedestrian-friendly area,” Cote said. He noted that the sudden nature of the attack left neighbors asking how such an event could occur in broad daylight at a familiar dining spot.
Police have not indicated whether the suspect had any prior contact with the restaurant or its staff. The lack of an apparent motive has added to the unease among regular customers who frequent the chain for its daytime meals.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are still working to determine exactly what led to the confrontation. They have not released surveillance footage or additional witness statements at this time. The focus remains on gathering evidence and confirming the sequence of events inside the restaurant.
Officials continue to urge anyone with information to contact DeKalb County police. The case is being handled as an isolated incident, though the randomness of the attack has prompted renewed conversations about personal safety in everyday settings.
