Josh Trank emerged as one of Hollywood’s most exciting up-and-coming directors following the critical and commercial success of 2012’s Chronicle. That breakout put him in an extraordinarily rare position. Announced as a future Star Wars director alongside Gareth Edwards for one of the then forthcoming Star Wars Story films, the filmmaker had already broken records as the youngest director to go in at number one with his breakout film.
As for the Fantastic Four fiasco causing him to lose Star Wars, Trank admitted the on-set turmoil got back to Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, enough to make her reconsider the deal they had for the spinoff. His own account of the situation was blunt: “I quit because I knew I was going to be fired if I didn’t quit.” It was revealed Trank had caused significant damage to a house he was renting during filming, and this sort of behavior would eventually cost him the chance to helm a standalone Star Wars picture, seemingly shoving him off Hollywood’s radar.

Having made an enormous impact with The Deer Hunter, which was just his second feature film and saw him win Best Director at the Academy Awards, many were initially intrigued by his follow-up picture, Heaven’s Gate, a Western epic following a feud between land barons and European immigrants in 1890s Wyoming. The film’s collapse was staggering in scale. Heaven’s Gate was such an unimaginable disaster that it even caused the collapse of its studio, United Artists.
Against a production budget of $44 million, the film grossed just $3.5 million and earned widespread critical derision. Worse than its commercial and critical performance, the production was marred by accusations of animal cruelty and its barring of the American Humane Association from being present on set. A part of the film’s lasting legacy is its morbid contribution to the authority behind the “no animals were harmed” tag that has become a common sight in film credits since. It also effectively marked an abrupt end to Cimino’s career as a Hollywood star.
Brett Ratner: A $2 Billion Director Who Vanished Overnight
Brett Ratner was one of Hollywood’s most commercially successful filmmakers, with his films grossing over $2 billion at the global box office. He began his career directing music videos before making his feature directorial debut at 28 years old with the action comedy hit Money Talks, then followed with the blockbuster Rush Hour and its successful sequels. By any commercial metric, he was untouchable.
Then came the wave of allegations that arrived during the height of the MeToo movement in late 2017. Justin Baldoni: The Director Caught in Hollywood’s Most Expensive Feud
Justin Baldoni is an American actor and director best known for playing Rafael Solano on Jane the Virgin and for starring in and directing the romantic drama It Ends with Us in 2024. He also directed Five Feet Apart and Clouds. The film he made with Blake Lively became a massive hit, but the fallout was catastrophic. Lively led and produced It Ends with Us, a drama that Baldoni directed, produced, and also starred in, with the movie grossing $351 million globally on a budget of $25 million.
The talent agency WME, which had signed Baldoni in March 2019, dropped him in December 2024 following news of Lively’s complaint. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni eventually settled their It Ends with Us lawsuit on May 4, 2026, just two weeks before trial. No money changed hands. No one admitted wrongdoing. A studio executive’s assessment of Baldoni’s situation was plain: “He could bring his own career back, but no one will hire him right now.”
Richard Kelly: The Cult Hero Who Swung Too Big and Disappeared
