Every “no” in Hollywood carries a cost. Sometimes it’s small – a forgettable film that goes nowhere. Other times, that single word redirects entire careers and rewrites pop culture history. The roles that got away have a strange power over the people who passed on them, and in the entertainment industry, a handful of decisions have haunted some of the biggest names in the business for decades.
What’s striking isn’t just that these actors passed on legendary roles. It’s that most of them knew, eventually, exactly what they had let go. The films became defining cultural touchstones. The actors who took the parts became icons. And the ones who said no were left with something that money and success rarely fully quiets: genuine regret.
Will Smith – Neo in The Matrix (1999)
One of the actors almost cast as Neo in “The Matrix” was Will Smith, who turned down the film because he didn’t understand the Wachowskis’ pitch. The concept of bullet-time photography was so novel that it simply didn’t translate well in a verbal description, and Smith couldn’t picture what the directors were actually trying to create.
To make matters worse, Smith turned down “The Matrix” in favor of “Wild Wild West,” which was both a box office flop and is often viewed as one of the worst films in his entire filmography. Speaking to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, Smith confirmed that he did indeed regret turning down the role. The Matrix went on to revolutionize action filmmaking and turned Keanu Reeves into a genuine global phenomenon.
Matt Damon – Jake Sully in Avatar (2009)
Before casting Sam Worthington in Avatar, James Cameron sent an offer to his number one pick, Matt Damon, who turned it down but still regrets not starring as Jake Sully in the visually ambitious film. The timing was genuinely difficult for Damon, who had already committed to The Bourne Ultimatum and couldn’t fully step away from that project.
Damon expressed his feelings about the decision in a 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, describing it as “the dumbest thing an actor ever did in the history of acting,” referencing not only turning down the role but also rejecting ten percent of the box office. James Cameron has since stated he is still eager to work with Damon on a future Avatar film, though he has implied that the ten percent box office arrangement may no longer be on the table.
Henry Winkler – Danny Zuko in Grease (1978)
Henry Winkler, best known for his iconic portrayal of Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in Happy Days, faced a pivotal decision when he was offered the role of Danny Zuko in Grease. Fearing that taking on another 1950s “cool guy” role might pigeonhole him as a one-dimensional actor, Winkler reluctantly declined the opportunity. It was a reasonable concern on paper, but the outcome stung.
Grease became one of the smash hits of the decade and at the time was the highest-grossing musical ever, and nowadays it’s hard to imagine anyone other than John Travolta as Danny Zuko. As time passed and Grease evolved into a cultural phenomenon, Winkler began to harbor regrets about his decision. The irony is that his fear of being typecast led him to miss one of cinema’s most beloved characters entirely.
Denzel Washington – Detective Mills in Se7en (1995)
The role of Detective Mills in Se7en was initially offered to Denzel Washington. The Malcolm X star passed it up, claiming that the film was too dark for his liking. After Washington saw the movie in theaters, he regretted his decision and called it one of the biggest mistakes of his career. The role eventually went to Brad Pitt, whose performance is now inseparable from the film’s identity.
In 2025, the film’s director David Fincher mentioned that Washington was approached long before he was on board to direct. The actor didn’t like the script, which caused it to be rewritten over ten times before Washington ultimately pulled out completely. Se7en became one of the defining crime thrillers of the 1990s, and the chemistry between Pitt and Morgan Freeman remains one of its most celebrated elements.
Sean Connery – Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings (2001)
Sean Connery was the studio’s first option for the role of Gandalf. He declined because he had never read J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel and simply “didn’t understand the script.” Connery reportedly passed not once but on multiple occasions, never quite connecting with the material despite the efforts made to bring him on board.
Had Connery taken the part, he would have earned around 400 million dollars, which is more than any other actor has ever been paid for a single role. Christopher Plummer, who also turned down the Gandalf role, emphasized it as the missed opportunity that tears him up the most, even as he praised Ian McKellen’s eventual Oscar-nominated performance. The Lord of the Rings trilogy went on to win seventeen Academy Awards across its three films.
Burt Reynolds – Han Solo in Star Wars (1977)
Star Wars is the sci-fi franchise that has defined generations, and back in the 1970s it hadn’t yet been established as a global icon, with some viewing it as a financial risk. This led to Burt Reynolds deciding against appearing in the epic when he was offered the role of Han Solo, which ultimately went to Harrison Ford. Reynolds simply wasn’t interested in that kind of part at the time.
Speaking to Business Insider in 2016 about turning down the role, Reynolds revealed: “I just didn’t want to play that kind of role at the time. Now I regret it. I wish I would have done it.” Star Wars became a record-breaking success and Harrison Ford became an instant phenomenon as Solo. To add further insult, Reynolds has also spoken about how he regrets passing on the chance to succeed Sean Connery as James Bond. For Reynolds, it was a genuinely painful run of missed opportunities.
