Some horror films earn praise for being fun to revisit. Others earn it for being so effective that a second viewing feels like a real ask. Critics and audiences often describe the second group as movies they admire but don’t plan to see again.

The three below are widely respected, and each has a different reason viewers give for stopping at one watch. None of it is about jump scares. It’s mostly about how the films leave you feeling once they end.

Ari Aster’s feature debut premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018 and was released by A24 later that year. It follows a family unraveling after the death of a grandmother, with Toni Collette in the lead role. Critics widely praised her performance, and many pointed to it as the film’s emotional anchor.

Viewers who call it a one time watch usually point to the grief at its center rather than the supernatural plot. The first half plays like a family tragedy, and that realism makes the later horror hit harder. Once you know where the story goes, sitting through that slow build again can feel less like entertainment and more like enduring it.

Also written and directed by Ari Aster, Midsommar arrived in 2019 and moved horror out of the dark and into bright Swedish daylight. Florence Pugh plays Dani, a grieving woman who travels with her boyfriend and his friends to a rural festival hosted by a commune called the Hårga. A longer director’s cut runs about 171 minutes, which adds to the endurance factor.

The film’s reputation for being hard to rewatch comes from its mix of ritual violence and emotional discomfort, especially around a painful, unraveling relationship. Because nothing hides in shadows, there’s little relief for the viewer. Many fans say one viewing is plenty to appreciate the craft, from the production design to Pugh’s performance, without wanting to sit through it again.

Pascal Laugier’s 2008 French film became one of the most discussed titles of the New French Extremity movement. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year, and it starts as a revenge story before shifting into something far bleaker. An American remake followed in 2015, though the original remains the version people usually talk about.

Reviewers have long noted its severity, and the film sparked heated debate about whether its brutality serves a purpose or simply overwhelms. Viewers who admire it often describe it as a movie they respect but can’t picture revisiting. Its power lies in how relentless it is, and for many people that is precisely the reason once feels like enough.
