Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump stepped onto a striking black carpet at the Kennedy Center Thursday evening, joined by cabinet members and allies for the world premiere of her introspective film Melania.
Cabinet and VIPs Fill the Seats
The event drew a notable assembly of political figures straight from a White House cabinet meeting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth arrived with his wife, while Education Secretary Linda McMahon donned a fur coat and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins sported beaded fringe accents.[1][2]
Other attendees included Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz with his family, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Rapper Nicki Minaj and Melania’s father, Viktor Knavs, added to the diverse crowd. The gathering underscored the film’s pull within Trump’s orbit.
- Political heavyweights dominated the arrivals.
- Celebrity touches elevated the atmosphere.
- No restrictions barred elected officials, per Melania’s adviser.
Intimate Glimpse into 20 Pivotal Days
The 104-minute film chronicles the 20 days surrounding President Trump’s 2025 inauguration. Viewers witness behind-the-scenes moments, from Inauguration Day preparations aboard Air Force One to trips aiding storm-hit North Carolina and wildfire-affected California.
Melania narrates personal reflections, including the loss of her mother, Amalija Knavs, in 2024. Scenes capture outfit selections, diplomatic planning, and candid exchanges, like her urging the president to highlight unity in his address. As executive producer through her Muse Films, she exercised full editorial control.

Melania clarified its style on the carpet: “Some have called this a documentary. It is not.” She called it “a creative experience that offers perspectives, insights and moments.”[1]
Record Budget Fuels Theatrical Rollout
Amazon MGM Studios secured the project for $40 million, committing another $35 million to marketing for a $75 million total. Director Brett Ratner defended the investment amid scrutiny.
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Acquisition | $40 million |
| Marketing | $35 million |
| Total | $75 million |
The film hits 1,500 to 1,700 theaters worldwide starting Friday, backed by NFL ads, London billboards, and Las Vegas Sphere promotions. Ratner emphasized quality over controversy: “This wasn’t about corruption. Melania only cared about one thing, making a great movie for audiences.”[3][4]
Red Carpet Highlights and Praise
President Trump lauded the screening: “It’s really good. Glamorous – very glamorous. We need some glamour.” Melania expressed pride: “I’m very proud of the film so people may like it, may don’t like it, and that’s their choice.” She reflected on her journey: “I’m an immigrant… I’m very proud to be an American citizen.”[1][2]
RFK Jr. called her “a deep person” misunderstood by the public. Speaker Johnson deemed it “worth the investment.” The black carpet and minimalist branding set a sophisticated tone, contrasting typical Hollywood flash.
