Las Vegas – Lionel Richie, the enduring R&B powerhouse and staple of the city’s entertainment scene, has long guarded his personal life from the spotlight. Known for chart-topping hits and sold-out residencies, the artist who has moved over 145 million records worldwide finally shared his unfiltered story in the memoir Truly. Released last fall, the book quickly climbed bestseller lists, offering fans rare glimpses into the man behind the music.[1]

A Shy Late Bloomer Finds His Voice

Richie often described himself as a self-proclaimed late bloomer during his early years. He grew up in a modest environment, far from the glamour of stardom that would define his career. His journey began with local R&B groups in the mid-1960s before he rose to prominence with the Commodores.[2]

Transitioning to a solo act proved transformative. Albums like his debut spawned massive hits, cementing his status as a global sensation. The singer’s path included unexpected pivots, from contemplating priesthood to embracing music full-time. These revelations in Truly highlight the vulnerabilities that fueled his success.

Decades of Privacy Shattered by ‘Truly’

For years, Richie maintained a low profile on personal matters despite his fame. He avoided the tell-all trend common among peers. The memoir marks his first comprehensive account of life events, blending humor with hardship.[3]

“You are the author of your own story. Only you can tell it,” Richie stated, encapsulating the motivation behind the project. Published by HarperOne on September 30, 2025, the book revisits pivotal moments that shaped him. Readers praise its candid tone, which inspires those chasing dreams amid doubt.

The audiobook version features narration by Emmy winner Blair Underwood, adding another layer to the intimate narrative.[4]

Deep Ties to Las Vegas Entertainment

Richie has headlined numerous shows in Las Vegas, making the city a second home. His performances at venues like the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas draw crowds eager for classics. In October 2025, he participated in a special event discussing Truly, moderated by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco – no music, just conversation.[5]

This appearance underscored the memoir’s promotion amid his ongoing residency commitments. Vegas fans appreciate how the book complements his stage presence, revealing the personality they glimpse between songs.

Key Milestones in a Storied Career

Richie’s achievements span decades. He earned four Grammy Awards, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe. His songwriting prowess delivered nine consecutive No. 1 hits, a rare feat.[6]

• Co-founder of the Commodores, pioneering funk and ballads.
• Solo breakthrough with albums selling millions, including three top-five singles from his debut.
• Contributions to We Are the World and soundtracks like Endless Love.
• Over 145 million records sold globally.[1]
