Every era of Hollywood has its skeptics, the critics and columnists who decide early on that a performer simply doesn’t have what it takes. Sometimes they’re right. Sometimes, though, the actor in question spends the next twenty or thirty years quietly dismantling that verdict, one role at a time.
What follows are six performers who absorbed some of the harshest early notices in modern film criticism, then built careers that outlasted the doubt entirely. Their stories aren’t about instant redemption. They’re about persistence, odd career turns, and the slow accumulation of proof.
Keanu Reeves
For much of the 1990s and 2000s, Keanu Reeves was treated as a punchline for wooden acting. Neo was seen as a blank cipher and that led to his portrayer being derided as wooden or dull. Even his breakout in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure left him typecast, and his own self-assessment was blunt. In an unpublished 1987 interview, when asked how long he’d been acting, Reeves shuffled around the matter, coyly replying, “Well… I don’t know if I’m acting now. I’m pretty bad.”
The reversal came gradually rather than overnight. The bad films are still bad, but starting with 2014’s John Wick, the public began to develop a greater appreciation for what he could do, playing an assassin who gave up the life for love. By the 2020s, that reassessment had become mainstream consensus, and when film critics for The New York Times ranked the best actors of this century, one of the biggest shocks was Reeves’s placement. Four decades after Bill & Ted, he’s now regarded as one of the more reliable and beloved leading men working today.
Sylvester Stallone
Stallone spent much of his career fighting a reputation as an action meathead rather than a serious actor, a tension he lived with even as he wrote his own scripts. Throughout his career, the more intellectual side of his personality often came into conflict with the meatheads he portrayed onscreen. For years he tried, without much traction, to be taken seriously as a dramatic performer. For many years, Stallone tried to stretch his muscles as a serious thespian without much luck.
Creed changed that calculus almost overnight. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, received critical acclaim, and Stallone’s portrayal of the character received widespread acclaim and accolades, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and his third Academy Award nomination. Stallone himself seemed almost surprised by the reception, admitting in an interview that “I actually am startled. It’s a character that I love and never thought I’d play again. I didn’t think it would resonate like it did, especially with a newer generation.” Nearly forty years after the original Rocky, the role that once typecast him became the one that finally earned him serious critical respect.
Adam Sandler
Few actors have been dismissed with as much consistency as Adam Sandler, whose slapstick comedies became critical punching bags even as they drew enormous audiences. Stars don’t come more divisive than Adam Sandler, an actor long beloved by mass film-watching audiences but dismissed with an almost instinctive eye-roll by critics. The numbers back up the reputation, since he has a whopping 13 films with a rating of 10 percent or less on Rotten Tomatoes, two of which scored zero.
Yet buried inside that same filmography were signs critics eventually couldn’t ignore. Sandler first convincingly showed he wasn’t limited to slapstick with Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love in 2002, which came just as he was beginning to be pigeonholed. The Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems pushed that reassessment further, with reviewers noting that Sandler sheds his movie star persona and turns in an ego-less, real performance as a desperate and sick man. Decades after his critics first wrote him off, Sandler still bounces between broad comedies and prestige dramas, seemingly unbothered by which side gets the praise.
Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum’s early career gave critics an easy label to reach for. It would have been easy to dismiss Tatum as just another Hollywood pretty boy at the beginning, given that the former model and male stripper kick-started his career in less-than-desirable fare. Magic Mike, built partly around his own past as a dancer, only seemed to confirm the typecasting at first glance.
Foxcatcher forced a reconsideration. It’s amazing to think that just a few years earlier, Tatum was being dismissed as a pretty-boy actor with no particular acting talent, yet he proved several times what a great performer he could be when given the chance. The film itself landed to strong reviews, and Foxcatcher received critical acclaim, with many praising the performances of Carell, Tatum, and Ruffalo, holding an approval rating of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Tatum has since moved comfortably between studio comedies and more serious fare, a range that would have surprised the critics who first pegged him as disposable.
Mark Wahlberg
Before he was an actor, Wahlberg was Marky Mark, a rapper whose attempt to reinvent himself on screen was greeted with plenty of skepticism. Despite the name change, many people snickered at the idea of the has-been rapper thinking he could make it as an actor, but from the get-go, he was proving them wrong. Early roles in Renaissance Man and Fear chipped away at the doubt, but it was one specific part that changed the conversation entirely.
Boogie Nights became the turning point that critics couldn’t dismiss. He received critical praise for his performance as porn actor Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights (1997). From there, the credibility only compounded, and in the following years he earned positive reviews for films such as The Big Hit, Three Kings, The Perfect Storm, and Four Brothers. Wahlberg eventually earned an Academy Award nomination for The Departed, cementing a career arc that began with people snickering at a former pop star trying to act.
Melissa McCarthy
Melissa McCarthy faced a different, uglier kind of early dismissal, one rooted less in her talent than in critics fixating on her body. Her breakout in Bridesmaids proved impossible to wave away, though, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2012 and establishing her as one of the sharpest comedic performers of her generation.
What followed was a stretch of leading comedic roles in films like The Heat, Spy, and Ghostbusters, work that built a loyal audience even as some reviewers kept treating her as a novelty act rather than a serious talent. Can You Ever Forgive Me in 2018 finally forced a fuller reassessment, earning McCarthy an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and widespread praise for a quieter, more dramatic register than critics had previously credited her with reaching. Nearly fifteen years after Bridesmaids, she remains a steady presence across film and television, having outlasted the reductive framing that once defined her coverage.
