Childhood fame has a reputation for ending badly. Plenty of young performers disappear from view once their voices change, and the industry rarely gives second chances. Still, a small group has managed to stay in front of audiences for decades.
Some did it by changing direction, and others by learning new skills behind the camera. This list looks at ten of them, using publicly documented career milestones rather than guesswork.
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster worked steadily as a child, and at twelve she earned an Oscar nomination for Taxi Driver in 1976. That role could have typecast her. Instead, she moved into leading adult parts.
She later won Academy Awards for The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs, and she built a second career as a director. In 2024 she starred in True Detective: Night Country, which earned her an Emmy nomination and showed her range is still intact.
Ron Howard
Ron Howard was a familiar face as young Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show. He followed that with a major role as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. He was already a veteran by the time he reached his twenties.
His real adult success came as a filmmaker. He won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind. His directing credits have continued into recent years, including the 2024 survival drama Eden.
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore became a household name at six, thanks to Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. Her teenage years were publicly turbulent, which makes her later stability more notable. She came back with comedies such as The Wedding Singer and Never Been Kissed.
She co-founded the production company Flower Films and produced the Charlie’s Angels films. She also won a Golden Globe for Grey Gardens. Since 2020 she has hosted her own daytime talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.
Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman made her film debut at twelve in Léon: The Professional. Soon after, she became widely known as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequels. She also earned a psychology degree from Harvard while acting.
She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Black Swan. In recent years she has taken on varied projects, including the 2023 film May December and the Apple TV+ series Lady in the Lake in 2024.
Christian Bale
Christian Bale was thirteen when Steven Spielberg cast him in Empire of the Sun in 1987. The performance drew significant attention to a young British actor. He kept working through his teens without the sharp career dip many peers experienced.
As an adult he played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy and became known for dramatic physical transformations. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter. He has also received multiple nominations for roles in films such as American Hustle and Vice.
Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst gained notice as a child in Interview with the Vampire in 1994, when she was around eleven. Jumanji and Little Women followed soon after. She moved gradually into teen and adult roles rather than leaping all at once.
She played Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s superhero films and won the best actress prize at Cannes for Melancholia. Her work in The Power of the Dog brought an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2024 she appeared in Alex Garland’s Civil War.
Elijah Wood
Elijah Wood started acting as a boy, appearing in films such as Back to the Future Part II and Radio Flyer. He avoided the usual trap by choosing unusual projects as he grew up. That habit shaped the rest of his career.
He became globally famous as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also appeared in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and co-founded the production company SpectreVision. In 2025 he joined the cast of Yellowjackets for its third season.
Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe was eleven when he was cast as Harry Potter, and the film series ran from 2001 to 2011. A role that large could have defined him permanently. He chose to push against it, starting with a stage run of Equus.
He has since taken offbeat film roles, including Swiss Army Man and the title part in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. In 2024 he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Merrily We Roll Along.
Dakota Fanning
Dakota Fanning was seven when she received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for I Am Sam, which made her the youngest nominee in the award’s history at that time. She continued with films like Man on Fire and Charlotte’s Web. Few child actors had such a steady run of leading work.
As an adult she moved smoothly into television and supporting roles in major films. She appeared in the 2024 Netflix series Ripley and in the Netflix limited series The Perfect Couple the same year. She has avoided long gaps in her filmography.
Anna Paquin
Anna Paquin won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Piano at age eleven. She remains one of the youngest Oscar winners ever. Many expected the win to be a peak she could not follow.
She kept working through her teens, playing Rogue in the X-Men films. She later starred in the HBO series True Blood and won a Golden Globe for it. More recently she led the series Roswell, New Mexico, which ran from 2019 to 2022.
