In July 1985, Ostrum began practicing as a veterinarian at Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville, NY, before retiring in September 2023. He mostly treated dairy cows and farm animals, a world about as far from a chocolate factory as you can get.
2. Michael Schoeffling: from Sixteen Candles heartthrob to furniture maker
Michael Schoeffling played Jake Ryan, the dream boyfriend of an entire generation of moviegoers, and then simply vanished from public life. He retired from acting in 1991, and after his acting career, Schoeffling opened a woodworking shop and produced handcrafted furniture. He and his wife left Los Angeles behind for good.
Robinson and Schoeffling moved away from Hollywood to his hometown of Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, to open their own woodworking design business. Schoeffling has kept out of the public eye and has never given interviews since retiring from acting, with his wife telling People in 2014 that he “simply values his privacy.” Reporters have tried tracking him down for decades with little success, which seems to be exactly how he wants it.
3. Danny Lloyd: from The Shining’s Danny Torrance to biology professor
Danny Lloyd delivered one of horror cinema’s most unsettling child performances in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, then walked away from the industry almost entirely. After appearing in Will: G. Gordon Liddy, Lloyd retired from acting, and he became a professor at the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in 2004. The transition from a haunted Colorado hotel to a Kentucky classroom could hardly be more different.
He became a popular, obviously successful biology teacher, voted by his own students as his campus’ top instructor. He has said he stopped acting just before high school because “this wasn’t much fun anymore,” and now values the anonymity that comes with teaching, where he’s “not recognizable.” It’s a career built entirely on his own terms, far from the horror franchise that made his face famous.
4. Mary Badham: from Scout Finch to art restorer
Mary Badham earned an Oscar nomination at age ten for playing Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, then largely left acting behind for decades. After just four years of acting, Badham stopped for decades, partly because the movie caused friction between herself and racist white families back home in Alabama. She went to college instead and built a completely different life.
Badham finished school and went on to work in education, medicine, and art restoration, though the compassionate message of To Kill a Mockingbird has remained her touchstone. As of 2018, she still kept a full schedule working as both an art restorer and a college testing coordinator. She has occasionally returned for anniversary events and a stage production, but her working life has stayed rooted far from Hollywood.
5. Julie Dawn Cole: from Veruca Salt to hypnotherapist
Julie Dawn Cole played the spoiled, scene stealing Veruca Salt in the original 1971 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, a role that made her instantly recognizable to generations of viewers. Rather than building on that fame with a steady stream of film roles, she moved into a very different field of work over the following decades. She trained as a hypnotherapist, a profession that draws on patience and close attention to people, skills not so different from acting but applied in an entirely private setting.
