Plenty of actors move behind the camera early. Others wait until they’ve spent decades watching directors work, and then step up with a clear sense of what they want to say. The nine women below all made their feature directing debuts at 40 or older.
Some had already directed television or shorts, so “first feature” is the key phrase here. Ages are based on birth dates and the year each film was made or premiered.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost Daughter (2021)
Maggie Gyllenhaal was in her early forties when The Lost Daughter premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. She adapted Elena Ferrante’s novel herself and cast Olivia Colman as a academic whose beach vacation stirs up uncomfortable memories of motherhood.
The debut got serious awards attention. It earned Oscar nominations for Colman, Jessie Buckley and Gyllenhaal’s adapted screenplay, and she won the screenplay prize in Venice. Few first features arrive with such a confident voice.
Regina King, One Night in Miami… (2020)
Regina King had directed television for years, including episodes of acclaimed series, before her first feature. One Night in Miami… premiered at Venice in 2020, when she was 49. It imagines a night in 1964 when Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown meet after Ali’s title win.
She’d already won an Oscar as an actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, so her directing debut meant a second career chapter. The film was nominated for three Oscars, including adapted screenplay and supporting actor for Leslie Odom Jr.
Halle Berry, Bruised (2020)
Halle Berry made her directing debut with Bruised, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2020, when she was 54. She also starred as Jackie Justice, a disgraced mixed martial arts fighter who’s pushed back into the cage. Berry has said in interviews that she took over directing duties after the original director left the project.
Netflix released the film in late 2021. It gave Berry a physically demanding lead role and a first shot at shaping a whole film from behind the camera.
Robin Wright, Land (2021)
Robin Wright had directed episodes of House of Cards before she made Land. The film debuted at Sundance in January 2021, when she was 54. She stars as Edee, a grieving woman who retreats to a remote cabin in the Wyoming wilderness.
It’s a quiet, spare story, and that restraint was part of the point. Wright was working with a small cast and a landscape that does much of the emotional work.
Eva Longoria, Flamin’ Hot (2023)
Eva Longoria had directed television, but Flamin’ Hot was her first feature, and she was 48 when it premiered at SXSW in 2023. The film tells the story of Richard Montañez, a former janitor who says he helped create Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Searchlight released it on Hulu and Disney+.
The story drew scrutiny, since a Los Angeles Times investigation questioned Montañez’s claims about inventing the snack. Longoria’s film, meanwhile, was praised for putting a Latino story front and center.
Elizabeth Banks, Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)
Elizabeth Banks was 41 when Pitch Perfect 2 reached theaters in 2015. She’d acted in the first film, then took the director’s chair for the sequel, which was her feature debut. It followed the Barden Bellas as they competed on a world stage.
The movie was a big commercial hit, and its opening weekend became a notable record for a first-time female director. It proved that an actress turned director could handle a big studio comedy with a large ensemble.
Scarlett Johansson, Eleanor the Great (2025)
Scarlett Johansson turned 40 in late 2024, and her first feature, Eleanor the Great, premiered at Cannes in May 2025 in the Un Certain Regard section. The film stars June Squibb as a 90-year-old woman who ends up in a mix of grief, friendship and white lies after moving to New York. Tory Kamen wrote the screenplay.
Johansson had spent decades working with major directors, so her choice of a small, character-driven story is telling. It’s a gentle drama rather than a showy debut.
Valeria Golino, Miele (2013)
The Italian actress Valeria Golino was 47 when Miele screened at Cannes in 2013 in Un Certain Regard. She’d had a long acting career in Italy and Hollywood before turning to directing. The film follows a young woman, played by Jasmine Trinca, who secretly helps terminally ill people end their lives.
It’s a serious, morally complicated subject, and Golino handled it without melodrama. For many viewers, it showed that her instincts as a performer carried over into directing.
Lea Thompson, The Year of Spectacular Men (2017)
Lea Thompson, best known for Back to the Future, had directed television before this film. The Year of Spectacular Men was her feature debut, released in 2017 when she was in her mid fifties. Her daughter Madelyn Deutch wrote the script and starred, while another daughter, Zoey Deutch, also appeared.
The film is a coming-of-age comedy about a young woman’s messy romantic life after college. It’s a modest, family-built project, and that makes it a nice contrast to the bigger studio debuts on this list.
Taken together, these nine debuts show there’s no deadline for directing a first feature. Some of these women had years of television behind the camera, while others went straight from acting to directing. Either way, they arrived with experience, and it shows in the films they chose to make.
