9 Celebrities Who Made Surprisingly Great Voice Actors

There’s a particular kind of surprise that happens when an actor you know for one thing shows up somewhere completely different. A voice actor’s job is invisible by design, and that makes it all the more interesting when a movie star with a very recognizable face turns out to have an equally distinctive voice, one that ends up carrying an entire character without a single visible expression. Animation and video game adaptations have leaned hard into stunt casting over the past few years, pulling in actors who had no obvious business being in a recording booth. Some of these performances flopped, quietly forgotten within a season. Others became the reason people bought tickets in the first place.

Keanu Reeves is not the first name that comes to mind for a cartoon hedgehog, and that’s exactly what made the casting news land so hard in 2024. Keanu Reeves joined the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to voice the role of Shadow. The character is a dark mirror of Sonic himself, and Reeves brought a clipped, weary intensity to it that felt lifted straight out of his action roles.

What made it work wasn’t just stunt casting. Keanu Reeves went on to voice Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic X Shadow Generations, becoming one of only two Sonic Cinematic Universe voice actors to subsequently voice a character in the video game series. He also earned recognition beyond the box office for the role, since he was nominated for a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Male Voice from an Animated Movie for his work on Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That’s a rare crossover for an actor best known for gun-fu and trench coats.

Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna

Idris Elba built his reputation on gritty crime dramas and biographical films, so hearing him growl through an angry orange echidna was jarring at first. The casting stuck, though, and Elba reprised his role from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starring as the voice of Knuckles. He leaned into it enough to get his own spinoff.

Elba clearly took the physical side of voice work seriously, too. Idris Elba was seen recording his lines for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 while wearing giant Knuckles gloves, a small but telling detail about his dedication to the role. Elba himself described the shift in craft plainly, saying doing animation is a different skill set, and if you’re not worried about how you look, you can get your voice to do all sorts of things.

Jack Black as Bowser

Jack Black had already built a career on big, theatrical energy long before Bowser came along, so in hindsight the casting looks almost inevitable. Still, nobody expected Black’s performance as Bowser to include a sentimental ballad in which the character expresses his love for Princess Peach. That song, “Peaches,” became a genuine pop culture moment rather than a throwaway bit.

The role has only grown since 2023. Black returned as Bowser in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie alongside Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Keegan-Michael Key. He kept the musical bit going too, since Black debuted a brand new Bowser song on Jimmy Fallon around the sequel’s release, even though it wasn’t included in the film itself.

Chris Pratt as Mario

Chris Pratt’s casting as Mario drew plenty of skepticism online before the film even released, mostly from fans expecting a more cartoonish Italian accent. The finished performance won most of that skepticism over, and the box office numbers backed it up. The film earned the top opening of all time for an animated movie with $377 million in worldwide ticket sales.

Pratt’s version of Mario leaned into warmth and everyday charm rather than exaggerated comedy, which turned out to be the smarter bet. He returned for the follow-up too, since the returning voice actors for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie include Mario played by Chris Pratt, alongside Princess Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Toad, and Kamek. That continuity matters, because audiences clearly wanted more of his take on the character rather than a recast.

Bryan Cranston as Li Shan

Bryan Cranston spent years being one of television’s most intense dramatic actors, so hearing him play a soft, noodle-loving panda dad felt like a deliberate change of pace. Cranston reprised his role as Li Shan, Po’s biological panda father, in Kung Fu Panda 4. The character is gentle and a little goofy, about as far from Walter White as an actor can get.

Critics and fans noted how naturally Cranston slipped into the warmth of the role. Kung Fu Panda 3 revealed that Po reunites with his biological father Li, voiced by Cranston, who is still alive and leads a small community of pandas. The character stuck around for a reason, and Cranston’s easy, comic delivery is a big part of why audiences kept responding to Li across multiple films.

Seth Rogen as Mantis and Donkey Kong

Seth Rogen has quietly become one of the more prolific voice actors working today, even though most people still picture him from his live-action comedies. He voices Mantis in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, but his more surprising recent turn came in a very different world entirely. The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s voice cast included Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Rogen’s gravelly, laid back delivery ended up fitting Donkey Kong’s brash personality better than expected, giving the character a swagger that felt distinct from the games. He’s also staying busy outside animation while keeping voice work in the mix, since Rogen is set to co-star in Good Fortune alongside Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh. The range between his animated and live-action work says a lot about how flexible his voice actually is.

Awkwafina as Zhen

Awkwafina built her early career on scene-stealing comedic timing in live-action films, and that same rhythm translated surprisingly well into animation. After voice-over roles in Raya and the Last Dragon, The Bad Guys, Little Mermaid, and Migration, Awkwafina took on the role of Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4. Zhen is a sly, pickpocketing fox with a complicated backstory, and Awkwafina’s raspy delivery gave the character an easy charisma.

She described the role in her own words during press for the film, explaining that Zhen is a criminal who has spent her life pickpocketing, with a wry sense of humor and a few surprising secrets. It’s a small but telling example of how a comedian’s natural timing can carry an entire animated character without ever showing her face on screen.

Keegan-Michael Key as Toad

Keegan-Michael Key has built a career out of sketch comedy’s rapid-fire energy, and that same manic enthusiasm turned out to be perfect for one of gaming’s most excitable side characters. Key joined the voice cast of The Super Mario Bros. Movie as Toad, alongside Chris Pratt’s Mario and Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong. His performance leaned fully into Toad’s nervous, high pitched loyalty, and it landed as one of the film’s funnier surprises.

Key’s chemistry with the rest of the cast was strong enough that Nintendo and Illumination brought him straight back for the sequel. The returning voice actors for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie confirmed Key would once again voice Toad. It’s a small role on paper, but Key managed to turn a squeaky mushroom sidekick into a genuine scene stealer.

Danny DeVito as Philoctetes

Danny DeVito has spent decades as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comic actors, known for gruff, fast talking characters in film and television. Long before most of the actors on this list ever stepped into a recording booth, DeVito lent his rasping voice to Philoctetes, the disgraced satyr trainer in Disney’s animated Hercules. The role fit his comedic instincts perfectly, letting him play a cynical, washed up mentor without needing a single physical gesture to sell the frustration.

What made the performance memorable wasn’t flashy vocal range so much as pure comic timing, the same skill that made DeVito a sitcom fixture for years on Always Sunny in Philadelphia. His gravelly voice became instantly recognizable to a generation of kids who had no idea what he looked like. It’s a reminder that surprisingly great voice acting doesn’t always come from a big transformation. Sometimes it just takes a performer whose natural voice was already built for comedy.

Taken together, these nine performances make a simple point about voice acting that’s easy to overlook. A famous face doesn’t guarantee a memorable voice, and plenty of trained voice actors go unnoticed for a whole career. What these actors share is a willingness to fully commit to a character nobody could see, letting a performance live or die entirely on tone, timing, and a handful of recorded lines.
