9 Series Finales Viewers Still Debate, From ‘The Sopranos’ to ‘Seinfeld’

9 Series Finales Viewers Still Debate, From 'The Sopranos' to 'Seinfeld'

A series finale carries a strange burden. It has to satisfy people who’ve spent years with a show, and those people rarely want the same thing.

1. The Sopranos2. Seinfeld3. Lost4. Game of Thrones5. How I Met Your Mother6. Dexter7. Breaking Bad8. Newhart9. Roseanne

Some of the endings below were met with outrage on the night they aired. Others have been reexamined so often that the argument became part of the show’s legacy. Here are nine that still come up whenever fans start comparing notes.

1. The Sopranos

The finale, titled Made in America, aired on HBO on June 10, 2007. Tony Soprano sits in a New Jersey diner waiting for his family while a Journey song plays on the jukebox. Then the screen cuts to black, with silence on the soundtrack.

Many viewers thought their cable had failed. Others took it as a deliberate signal that Tony’s story simply stopped, or that he was killed without seeing it coming. Creator David Chase has declined for years to give a plain answer, and that refusal keeps the debate alive nearly two decades later.

Seinfeld ended on May 14, 1998, after nine seasons on NBC. The audience was enormous, with roughly seventy six million Americans tuning in, according to Nielsen figures widely reported at the time. The plot has Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer arrested in a small Massachusetts town for failing to help a man being robbed.

The trial brings back a parade of figures from earlier episodes as witnesses. Some fans loved the callback structure, since it fit a show built on petty social failures. Critics at the time were often cooler, and many viewers still wonder whether the quartet deserved a punishment that harsh or a punchline that quiet.

3. Lost

Lost closed on May 23, 2010, with an episode called The End. It wrapped the island storyline while introducing a “sideways” timeline that turned out to be a kind of afterlife waiting room. The final scene showed the characters gathering in a church before moving on together.

A persistent myth says everyone was dead the whole time. The producers have repeatedly said the island events were real, and that only the sideways world was the afterlife. Even so, plenty of viewers felt the finale left too many mysteries unresolved, and the show remains a standard example of a story that promised more answers than it delivered.

4. Game of Thrones

The Iron Throne aired on HBO on May 19, 2019, and drew a record audience for the network, at about thirteen and a half million viewers on the night. The episode ends with Bran Stark being named king of the Six Kingdoms. Daenerys Targaryen had been killed by Jon Snow in the previous scene.

Reaction was sharply divided. A fan petition asking HBO to remake the final season gathered well over a million signatures, though the network never responded with changes. Defenders say the ending fits the books’ themes about power, while critics argue the final season rushed character arcs that had been built carefully over years.

Last Forever aired on CBS on March 31, 2014, ending a story that began in 2005. The finale reveals that the mother, Tracy, has died years before Ted tells the story to his kids. His children then nudge him toward pursuing Robin again.

Many fans felt the ending undercut nine seasons of buildup around Tracy. Others saw it as the plan the writers had set from the start, since the kids’ reactions were filmed years earlier. An alternate ending was later included on the home release, which only gave both camps more material to argue about.

The original finale, Remember the Monsters?, aired on Showtime on September 22, 2013. It sent Dexter Morgan off to live as a lumberjack after faking his death at sea. Viewers widely criticized it as an anticlimax for a serial killer who spent years dodging capture.

The show’s creators effectively agreed that the ending needed work. Dexter: New Blood arrived in 2021 with a different conclusion, and Dexter: Resurrection followed on Paramount+ with Showtime in 2025. Few finales have been revisited so many times, and fans still disagree on whether the franchise ever really fixed the problem.

7. Breaking Bad

Felina aired on AMC on September 29, 2013, and is often held up as one of the more satisfying finales. Walter White tidies his loose ends, rescues Jesse Pinkman and dies in the meth lab he built. Roughly ten million people watched live, a high point for the series.

The debate here is gentler, and it’s about tidiness. Some viewers think the episode gave Walt too many victories and too clean an exit for a character who caused so much harm. Others say the symmetry is exactly what the story earned, and the 2019 film El Camino added another layer by following Jesse afterward.

8. Newhart

On May 21, 1990, Newhart closed after eight seasons with one of television’s best known twists. Bob Newhart’s innkeeper character, Dick Loudon, gets knocked unconscious by a golf ball. He then wakes up as Bob Hartley, the psychologist he played on his earlier sitcom, in bed with Suzanne Pleshette.

Audiences gasped, and critics have praised the gag as a clever tie to a prior series. Still, it remains a favorite example in the long argument over dream endings. Some call it a joyful wink, while others say it erased eight seasons of story for a single laugh.

9. Roseanne

The original Roseanne finale aired on ABC on May 20, 1997. It revealed that much of the final season, including Dan’s death from a heart attack and several relationship twists, was fiction written by Roseanne herself. Fans who had followed the family for nine seasons were stunned.

The decision echoed again in 2018, when the revival simply treated Dan as alive and ignored the earlier twist. After ABC cancelled the revival that year, a spinoff called The Conners continued without Roseanne Barr, and her character was written out through an opioid overdose. The result is a show whose ending was rewritten more than once, and viewers still disagree about which version counts.
