Greta Garbo was one of the biggest stars of the silent and early sound eras, and MGM built much of its prestige around her. Her final film came out in 1941, when she was only thirty-five. Few stars have ended a career so early and so completely.

She never returned to the screen, even though offers reportedly kept coming for years. She spent the rest of her life in New York, guarding her privacy carefully until her death in 1990. That long silence became part of her legend.

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly’s run was brief and brilliant. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Country Girl in 1955, and she worked with Alfred Hitchcock on Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief. In just a few years she became one of the most admired leading ladies in the business.

Her last film, High Society, was released in 1956. That same year she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and became Princess Grace. She stayed devoted to her royal role until her death in a car accident in 1982.

Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple was the most famous child star of the 1930s. As she grew older, her film career lost its momentum, and she stopped making movies as a young adult in the late 1940s. Rather than chase a comeback, she moved into a very different world.

She went on to serve in diplomacy, including as the United States ambassador to Ghana in the mid 1970s. Later she served as ambassador to Czechoslovakia, starting in 1989. She died in 2014, remembered as much for public service as for her dimples.

Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte Bardot became an international sensation after And God Created Woman in 1956. She made dozens of films and turned into a French cultural icon. By the early 1970s she was tired of the pressure of being constantly watched.

She retired from acting in 1973, when she was thirty-nine. She then devoted herself to animal welfare and founded her own foundation in 1986. Her later years were also marked by public controversy over political remarks, which shaped her reputation long after she left cinema.

Kim Novak

Kim Novak was a major draw in the 1950s, with roles in Picnic and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Studio bosses pushed her hard, and she often spoke about how uncomfortable it felt to be treated as a product. Over time she pulled back from the Hollywood system.

She left Los Angeles and settled in a quieter life in Oregon, where she had a ranch. There she focused on painting, animals, and privacy. In 2021 the Venice Film Festival honored her with a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, a reminder that her work was never forgotten.

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn won the Oscar for Roman Holiday in 1953 and later starred in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady. By the late 1960s she was one of the most recognizable women in the world. After Two for the Road and Wait Until Dark, both from 1967, she largely stepped back.

She put family first and lived mostly in Switzerland. She did return for a few projects, such as Robin and Marian in 1976. In her final years she became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and she died in 1993.

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz was a top box office name from the late 1990s through the 2000s. Her hits included There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, and the Shrek films. Annie, released in 2014, turned out to be her last major film for a long stretch.

She said she wanted to focus on her private life and family rather than keep up the pace of movie work. Her retirement did not last forever, though. She returned with the Netflix comedy Back in Action, alongside Jamie Foxx, which arrived in January 2025.

Emma Watson

She has stepped back from acting and turned toward other interests, including advocacy and business ventures. She has spoken openly about needing time away from the pace of fame. Whether she returns to acting remains her own decision.
