8 Movie Theater Snacks That Were Discontinued Over the Years

8 Movie Theater Snacks That Were Discontinued Over the Years

Snacks have been part of the movie ritual since the Great Depression, when theaters that once frowned on food finally gave in and started selling it. Plenty of what filled those candy counters has quietly slipped away since then.

Some treats were officially retired, while others just stopped showing up in lobbies. This list covers both kinds, and where a snack is only fading rather than gone, the entry says so.

Jujubes were part of the movie theater experience for decades. The firm, fruity candy was famously prone to sticking to your teeth, and it was a concession stand staple long before newer sweets like Nerds Gummy Clusters took over.

Jujubes were first introduced in the early 1900s. After Ferrara Candy Company acquired the brand in 2017, they were eventually discontinued, which ended an era for old school movie snacks.

Nestlé Dibs were bite sized nuggets of vanilla ice cream in a thin, Crunch studded chocolate shell. You could eat them one handful at a time without missing a scene. They were heavily promoted as a concession stand must have in the early 2000s.

Their theater presence has shrunk, particularly at AMC Theatres, after its partnership with Nestlé ended in late 2025 and early 2026. They aren’t officially discontinued and have still been spotted at some Regal Cinemas locations, but they’ve largely moved to grocery store freezers. Some reports suggest frozen alternatives from Mars, such as M&M’s ice cream sandwiches, are filling the gap.

Cream Cheese Jalapeño Poppers

Not every concession item came in a sealed box. Chains like TGI Friday’s popularized cream cheese jalapeño poppers in the 1990s, and they brought some fast food energy to concession stands with a crispy fried shell and a rich, slightly spicy filling.

Mental Floss lists AMC’s jalapeño poppers among snacks that are either discontinued or increasingly hard to find. Availability can differ from one theater to the next, so a few locations may still handle hot food differently.

Butterfinger BB’s

In the 90s, Butterfinger introduced Butterfinger BB’s to diversify its lineup. The brand turned what people loved about the original candy into small, round pieces you could simply pop into your mouth.

That bite size format suited a dark theater. Mental Floss counts them among the movie theater snacks that have mostly vanished. The regular Butterfinger bar, meanwhile, remains a familiar sight at many concession stands.

Boston Baked Beans

Ferrara’s Boston Baked Beans looked like beans but were essentially peanuts wrapped in a reddish brown candy coating, sold in boxes of different sizes. They were a classic box candy you could shake and snack on through a whole feature.

The candy lingered in theaters into the 21st century, but it may have been edged out for good by Peanut M&Ms. That is The Takeout’s read on it, not an official announcement from a theater chain.

Nabisco acquired Chuckles in 1970, and the candy slowly lost popularity over the next decade. In the mid 1980s, the rise of gummy candies gave it a bit of a resurgence.

Today it sits under Ferrara Candy Company, home to many former concession stand greats. You’re far more likely to bump into it in a candy aisle than at a theater counter.

Flicks

Flicks were small morsels of silky chocolate stacked in a Mentos like tube for easy mouth popping in dark theaters. With a light flick of the thumb, the chocolates popped out of the tin foil tube, a bit like Pez without the dispenser.

Raisinets, M&M’s, and Milk Duds still seem to be going strong, but younger generations haven’t heard of favorites like Sno-Caps and Flicks. The chocolate was fine, but the appeal lay more in the packaging.

Bit-O-Honey

Schutter-Johnson Company introduced Bit-O-Honey in 1924. The six piece candy bar is honey taffy with bits of almonds inside, both sweet and chewy.

The Takeout includes it among vintage candies that used to be popular at movie theater concession stands but have disappeared from them. The candy itself hasn’t necessarily vanished everywhere, but the lobby shelf is where it lost its place.
