Munich – Bayern Munich confirmed Friday that Canadian left back Alphonso Davies suffered a left hamstring injury during Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal exit against Paris Saint-Germain. Team doctors expect the 25-year-old to miss several weeks of action. Canada opens its co-hosted World Cup campaign on June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto, leaving the national team with limited time to adjust its plans.

Details of the Setback

The injury occurred in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal, which ended 1-1 and eliminated Bayern from the competition. Davies felt discomfort in his left hamstring during the match and was unable to continue at full capacity. Bayern’s medical staff assessed the damage immediately after the game and ruled out a quick return. The club has not specified an exact recovery timeline beyond the initial several-week estimate.

Impact on Canada’s World Cup Preparations

Davies ranks among Canada’s most experienced and influential players, with 15 goals in 58 international appearances. His absence forces coach Jesse Marsch to reconsider defensive options and set-piece strategies ahead of the tournament opener. The national team had counted on his pace and overlapping runs to stretch opposing defenses in the group stage. Several weeks on the sidelines could mean Davies misses at least the opening matches or enters the competition at reduced fitness.

Bayern’s Remaining Schedule

Bayern has already secured the Bundesliga title and will conclude its domestic campaign with the German Cup final against Stuttgart on May 23. Without Davies, the club must rely on alternative full-back options for the remainder of the season. The injury adds to a challenging end to a campaign that saw Bayern fall short in Europe despite domestic dominance.

Key points: Davies injured in Champions League loss; out several weeks; Canada faces World Cup opener in under a month; Bayern plays German Cup final May 23.
