Officers from the Flagstaff Police Department responded to reports of an armed suspect in a neighborhood north of Route 66 around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Aerial Support Ends in Fiery Crash

The Arizona DPS dispatched a Ranger helicopter, a Bell 407 model manufactured in 2004, to provide tactical air support to ground units. The aircraft went down around 10:15 p.m. west of downtown Flagstaff, erupting in flames upon impact.[5][6] Both crew members perished at the scene: the pilot, a 10-year U.S. Marine Corps veteran hired by DPS in May 2021, and the trooper-paramedic, who joined in June 2022.[2]

Suspect in Custody After Non-Fatal Wounds

Authorities subdued the lone suspect, who sustained non-life-threatening gunshot injuries during the confrontation. He received medical attention and now sits in custody. No other injuries occurred among officers or bystanders.[1][6]

The three involved Flagstaff officers entered administrative leave per protocol, along with a standard 30-day wellness period. A DPS employee also participated in the shooting. The AZDPS Major Incident Division leads the probe into the gunfire exchange.[4]

Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett commended the police for their heroism in a public statement. “I am so proud of the men and women of the Flagstaff Police Department for their heroic actions last night,” she said. “Their work to protect our community and detain an active shooter saved many lives. Tragically, the lives of two Arizona Department of Public Safety officers who were assisting Flagstaff Police ended when their helicopter crashed.”[2]

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation into the crash, with NTSB taking the lead. Residents reported hearing the helicopter blades, followed by a massive impact that shook homes. Local law enforcement expressed deep sorrow for the fallen crew.[7]
