Mt. Charleston, Nevada – NV Energy has placed parts of this mountain community on notice for possible planned power outages that could begin Sunday and continue into Monday. The utility activated its Public Safety Outage Management process after forecasts showed dangerous fire weather conditions across the area. Officials described the step as a proactive measure to limit the chance of equipment-related ignitions during periods of elevated wildfire risk.
Why the Utility Is Taking This Step
High winds combined with low humidity and dry vegetation create conditions where even a single spark can spread rapidly. NV Energy monitors these factors closely and uses the Public Safety Outage Management framework to decide when de-energizing lines may be necessary. The current warning covers selected portions of Mt. Charleston where the combination of terrain and weather raises the greatest concern.

Utility crews will continue to assess conditions in real time. If forecasts improve, the planned outages may be avoided or shortened. Residents are encouraged to treat the alert as a reminder to have backup plans ready rather than an absolute guarantee of service interruption.
What Residents Should Know
Power could be turned off without additional notice once the decision is made. The utility has emphasized that any shutdown would be temporary and focused on public safety. Households are advised to charge essential devices, secure refrigerated items, and identify alternative lighting sources ahead of the weekend.
Businesses and medical facilities in the affected zones have been contacted directly so they can adjust operations or arrange generators if needed. NV Energy said it will provide updates through its website, mobile app, and local media as new information becomes available.
Staying Prepared During the Alert Period
- Keep flashlights and battery-powered radios on hand.
- Charge phones, tablets, and power banks in advance.
- Have a cooler with ice ready for perishable food.
- Review evacuation routes in case fire conditions worsen.
- Sign up for NV Energy alerts if not already enrolled.
Key points to remember: The warning applies only to selected areas of Mt. Charleston. Outages remain possible rather than certain. Updates will be issued as weather conditions evolve.
