Las Vegas – The Vegas Golden Knights moved one win from the Western Conference final after defeating the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in overtime during Game 5 on May 13. The victory gave the Knights a 3-2 series lead in a matchup that has remained close throughout, with every prior contest decided by two goals or fewer. Both teams now prepare for Game 6 in Anaheim on Thursday, where Vegas can close out the series.

Penalty Shifts Early Momentum

The opening period began with Vegas establishing offensive pressure, yet a major penalty altered the flow. Defenseman Brayden McNabb received a five-minute major and game misconduct for a late hit on Ryan Poehling, who left the ice and did not return. Anaheim converted the extended power play when rookie Beckett Sennecke scored his fifth postseason goal, putting the Ducks ahead 1-0. Vegas answered quickly on its own power play. Forward Pavel Dorofeyev forced a turnover, stripped the puck from Chris Kreider, and beat goaltender Lukas Dostal with a hard wrist shot to tie the score at 1-1. The period ended level, preserving the tight contest that has defined the series.

Third-Period Breakthrough and Late Response

Tomas Hertl broke the deadlock in the third period with a goal in front of the net, his second of the postseason. The tally ended a 29-game drought for Hertl and gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. Anaheim refused to yield, however, as a passing play involving Cutter Gauthier, Mason McTavish, and Olen Zellweger produced a tying goal with just over three minutes left. Zellweger’s first playoff marker forced overtime for the first time in the series.

Overtime Decider and Goaltending Stability

Extra time lasted only 4:10. Jack Eichel drove to the net and created traffic, allowing Dorofeyev to bat a puck out of the air and beat Dostal for his second goal of the night. The 3-2 win improved Vegas to 3-0 in overtime this postseason. Carter Hart delivered another strong performance, stopping 34 of 36 shots for a.944 save percentage. He has now held opponents to two goals or fewer in three games of the series while facing at least 30 shots each time. The result leaves the Knights with home-ice advantage secured and one victory from advancing.

Series Outlook and Next Steps

Vegas holds a 3-2 lead and travels to Anaheim for Game 6 on Thursday. A win there would send the Knights to their third Western Conference final appearance. Anaheim must win the next two games to extend the series, placing added pressure on both clubs as the postseason schedule tightens.
