Grand Rapids, Michigan – Two men face serious assault charges after police say they attacked an unsuspecting bar patron in a parking lot, leaving him unconscious and hospitalized with critical injuries. The incident occurred outside the Twisted Bull Saloon on Eastern Avenue SE and has drawn attention to the rapid escalation of violence in what began as a routine night out.
Authorities described the sequence as a sucker punch followed by a direct kick to the head while the victim lay defenseless on the pavement. Both suspects were taken into custody last month and have since appeared in court.
The Confrontation Begins Inside the Bar
Staff at the Twisted Bull Saloon turned away a group that included the two defendants because they appeared overly intoxicated. Witnesses told investigators the group had been hostile from the moment they arrived and seemed intent on starting trouble. A bar employee noted that security checks for identification only heightened the tension.
The 30-year-old victim was leaving the establishment when he encountered the group in the doorway area. One of the men reportedly spoke to him as he tried to pass through. After a brief exchange, the victim continued toward the parking lot, unaware that several people from the group had begun to follow.
Surveillance Captures the Sudden Attack
Grand Rapids police reviewed video that shows one suspect delivering a sucker punch to the left side of the victim’s face. A second blow followed almost immediately. Officers noted in their report that the victim’s body went completely limp, causing him to collapse and strike the right side of his head on the concrete.
While the man lay motionless on the ground, one of the assailants delivered a soccer-style kick directly to the back of his head. The footage makes clear that the victim never attempted to fight back or swing at anyone during the entire encounter.
Victim Found in Critical Condition
Responding officers discovered the man lying on his back with the back of his head covered in blood. He told police he could not recall speaking with anyone he did not know and expressed confusion over why he had been targeted. He was transported to a local hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit.
Medical staff later confirmed the victim suffered two brain bleeds and remained in the ICU for several days. The severity of the injuries prompted prosecutors to file one count each of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm against Angel Gustavo Galvan Flores, 25, and Jaziel Reyes Roman, 26.
What matters now: The defendants posted bond after their arraignments last week and are scheduled for probable cause conferences. Police continue to review the case as the victim recovers from his injuries.
