Las Vegas – High school athletes across Nevada competed fiercely in playoff games on Tuesday, May 5, advancing their seasons in softball and boys volleyball tournaments.[1][2] Quarterfinals dominated the boys volleyball slate, while the 5A Southern League softball playoffs featured winners’ bracket clashes and elimination battles. Boys Volleyball Delivers Tight Quarterfinal Battles
In Class 5A state quarterfinals, four teams secured semifinal spots through hard-fought victories. Basic edged Palo Verde in a four-set thriller at Palo Verde High School.[1] Porter Hughes led with 20 kills, eight digs, and six blocks, while Ty Hardy contributed 13 kills, nine digs, and four blocks. Derek Dennett added 26 assists and seven digs. Basic now heads to Centennial for a 6 p.m. semifinal on Thursday.
Centennial dispatched Sierra Vista in straight sets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-16, at home. Gavin McColl recorded nine kills and four blocks, Lincoln Larson tallied seven kills, two aces, and two blocks, and Ty Ahlstrom handled 14 service receptions, four digs, and two aces. Arbor View dominated Foothill, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, behind Gunnar Robinson and Risden Miller’s 13 kills each. Keagan Sugden dished 41 assists. They travel to Shadow Ridge for Thursday’s 6 p.m. semifinal.
Shadow Ridge overcame Coronado, 25-14, 25-24, 25-20, at home. Jayden Elliazar-Keiki posted 20 assists, and Ty Harper notched 10 digs and three aces.[1]
Class 3A Volleyball Sees Straight-Set Sweep Wins
Class 3A quarterfinals produced decisive results for two advancing squads. Virgin Valley defeated The Meadows, 25-19, 25-12, 25-18, at The Meadows. Parker Jensen delivered 14 kills and three digs, with Dallin Moeai providing 20 assists and eight digs. They face Boulder City in a Thursday semifinal at 6 p.m.
Moapa Valley handled Doral Academy, 25-21, 25-17, 25-10, at Overton. Spencer Stolworthy recorded 35 assists and five digs, while Caden Rawson added 12 kills, six aces, and five digs. Their semifinal opponent is Coral Academy on Thursday at 6 p.m.[1]
Softball 5A Southern League Tournament Heats Up
The 5A Southern League softball playoffs continued with significant Tuesday matchups following Monday’s first-round games. Centennial rallied past Liberty, 7-5, at Centennial, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Amelia Carlson went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Elise Hanseen drove in two runs with a pair of doubles. They host Shadow Ridge in a Wednesday elimination game at 4 p.m.[1]
- Arbor View crushed Shadow Ridge, 12-1 in five innings, at Arbor View. Maliah Harrell shone 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs. Malayah Tellis added a double and three RBIs. Ava Henderson pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Arbor View meets Palo Verde in the winners’ bracket semifinal at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Durango.
- Palo Verde routed Coronado, 14-4, at Palo Verde. Sami Williams hit two home runs and three RBIs. Taylor Johns went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and RBI. Keileanna Johnson homered with four RBIs.
- Bishop Gorman topped Green Valley, 11-5, at Green Valley, collecting 17 hits. Makamae Eugenio went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, and three RBIs. Gwen Thewes and Samantha Lefever also homered. Gorman hosts Coronado at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
