Nevada leads lawsuit towards Trump administration over election govt order

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada Legal professional Common Aaron Ford and Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar joined a number of attorneys common in a lawsuit towards the Trump administration over an govt order, claiming it’s trying to implement a system of “unlawful federal overreach on elections.”

Ford, together with California Legal professional Common Rob Bonta, is co-leading the coalition of 19 attorneys common in a lawsuit filed towards President Donald Trump, U.S. Legal professional Common Pam Bondi, the federal Election Help Fee and others.

The lawsuit is trying to dam a latest govt order from the Trump administration signed on March 25, that makes an attempt to impose restrictions on election administration. Mandating Proof of Citizenship: Forces the Election Help Fee to require documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration, regardless of Congress by no means imposing such a requirement. 

State Company Management: Orders state-designated federal voter registration businesses to confirm citizenship earlier than offering registration kinds, unlawfully demanding using state assets.  

Proscribing Mail-In Ballots: Requires states to reject absentee and mail-in ballots obtained after Election Day, overriding state legal guidelines that permit counting of ballots solid by Election Day.

Concentrating on Navy & Abroad Voters: Calls for proof of citizenship and eligibility for navy and abroad voters, regardless of federal legislation not requiring them to offer such proof. 

Threatening Federal Funding: Seeks to withhold federal funds from states for noncompliance, violating constitutional ideas of state sovereignty and separation of powers. 

“The Trump administration tried to illegally seize power from the states and Congress by interfering in elections,” Ford mentioned. “Its action infringes on Nevada’s sovereignty and is an unprecedented federal power grab; and I will not stand for it. Our state elections are free, fair and safe, and Secretary Aguilar has done a phenomenal job in ensuring they remain so. That is why I am one of the leads on this lawsuit — to protect our sovereignty and to protect our democracy.”
