Columbus, Ohio – A missing children report filed late Sunday night quickly shifted focus from a search to an investigation into alleged abuse inside the family home. Two women who contacted authorities about their adopted children, ages 8 and 10, were arrested after the youngsters told officers they had fled to escape ongoing physical mistreatment. The case has prompted Franklin County officials to place four additional children from the household into protective custody while the criminal proceedings move forward.

The Initial Report and Swift Discovery

The sequence began around 11 p.m. when Julie Barfield, 47, and Kim Brown-Barfield, 43, noticed the two children were no longer at their residence on Pine Street in south Columbus. Brown-Barfield spent roughly two hours driving through the neighborhood before notifying police that the children were missing.

Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office soon located the pair on a nearby street after a resident flagged them down. The children immediately explained to the deputy that they had left home because of physical abuse by their parents. One child was observed with a bloody lip and marks on the stomach, injuries the youngster attributed to being slammed into a wall earlier that day.

Medical Evaluation Reveals Pattern of Mistreatment

Detectives transported the children to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for emergency assessments. During those evaluations, the 10-year-old described repeated beatings with a belt, instances in which the children’s hands were tied behind their backs, and periods of deliberate starvation used as punishment. Hospital staff also learned that the children had been burned with hot water on the same day they ran away.

These accounts prompted detectives and Franklin County Children Services workers to visit the Pine Street address. Officers recovered several pieces of evidence at the home before bringing the two women to the Franklin County Detective Bureau for formal interviews.

Admissions and Arrests Follow Interviews

During questioning, both women provided what court documents later described as “soft admissions.” They acknowledged witnessing and participating in the physical abuse of the children while the youngsters were in their care. The statements led directly to their arrests on charges of endangering children and felonious assault.

Each woman now faces one count of each offense. A judge set bond at $750,000 for both defendants on Wednesday and issued orders barring them from any contact with the children or with each other. Their next court appearance is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 29.

Additional Children Removed and Agency Response

Following the arrests, Franklin County Children Services took custody of four other children living in the home, whose ages range from 1 to 11. An agency spokesperson described the felony charges as concerning and noted that the family had not previously been involved with the agency.

The developments underscore the rapid escalation that can occur when a missing-persons call uncovers deeper safety concerns. Authorities continue to review the evidence collected at the residence as the case proceeds through the court system.

What matters now: The focus remains on ensuring the safety of all six children while the criminal case against the two women advances through scheduled hearings.
