Southern Nevada firefighters return dwelling after serving to struggle California wildfires

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Southern Nevada Strike Group of firefighters deployed to assist struggle lethal wildfires in Los Angeles County, returned to Las Vegas Thursday.

The 45-member group, which included firefighters from Clark County Hearth Division, Las Vegas Hearth & Rescue, and Henderson Hearth Division assisted Southern California crews for 2 weeks.

A group of 24 native firefighters have been deployed on Jan. 8, assigned to assist with the Palisades Hearth, which has burned greater than 23,000 acres and left 11 individuals lifeless.

A 21-person group deployed on January 9 was assigned to assist with the Eaton Hearth, which has burned greater than 14,000 acres and claimed 17 lives.

“I really have a loss for words for it,” Clark County Hearth Division Captain Travis Grove stated. “Seeing the devastation, everything that happened.”

Grove stated the destruction in areas ravaged by lethal wildfires was in contrast to something he had ever seen in his 22 years of firefighting.

“The entire area was full of people who lost everything,” Clark County Hearth Division Captain Jasmine Ghazinour added. “Their houses, their food, their way of living.”

Captains Ghazinour and Grove have been each a part of the strike group that returned to Southern Nevada Thursday night.

Throughout their two-week journey, Captain Grove informed 8 Information Now they jumped to assist in any means potential.

“There were still gas lines on fire, gas leaks everywhere,” Captain Grove stated. “And we were just filling in where we could.”

The group primarily centered on pulling down constructing fires, defending properties, clearing particles, and serving to evacuated households return to their properties; many have been burned to the bottom.

“We would catch people going in in the rubble and the debris,” Captain Grove recalled. “There’s nothing left in their house, and all they would want is a plant in the back of their house that was their mother’s and all that was left.”
