Las Vegas Valley – Transportation officials outlined three significant highway projects on Interstate 11 and U.S. Highway 95 that will launch this year to bolster safety and traffic flow across Southern Nevada.[1][2]

Tech-Driven Innovations Lead the Charge on I-11

Drivers could soon navigate a stretch of Interstate 11 equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to prevent accidents and manage congestion dynamically. The I-11 Tech Corridor project targets a five-mile section between the Spaghetti Bowl interchange and Summerlin Parkway. This $31 million effort, partly funded by a $6 million federal grant, introduces active traffic management signage for lane adjustments and variable speed limits.

Additional features include wrong-way driver detection systems with flashing beacons and intelligent traffic systems featuring road sensors, weather stations, and cameras for real-time monitoring. The Nevada Department of Transportation collaborated with the Regional Transportation Commission, Nevada State Police, and Clark County on the initiative. “Improvements will support condition management strategies in the Las Vegas Valley, which will employ and test a suite of emerging technologies,” said Sajid Sulahria, NDOT deputy director.[1] Construction begins this year, with full technology deployment slated for 2027.

Pavement Renewal Targets Critical I-11 Stretch

A companion project focuses on preserving the pavement along the same busy I-11 corridor between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Lake Mead Boulevard. Crews will perform milling and filling operations, along with grading to ensure a smoother surface. The work extends to upgrades for intelligent transportation systems and lighting fixtures.

One notable enhancement involves widening the southbound off-ramp at Jones Boulevard to accommodate heavier traffic volumes. These improvements aim to extend the roadway’s lifespan and reduce maintenance needs in the near term. NDOT scheduled the project to start this summer, aligning it with the tech corridor efforts for maximum impact.[1]

U.S. 95 Preservation Brings Comprehensive Fixes

Further south, a $42 million preservation project will rehabilitate 17 miles of U.S. Highway 95 between Nelson Road and the Interstate 11 junction near Boulder City. Teams plan milling and asphalt overlays to refresh the surface, coupled with structural repairs for damaged sections. New striping, signage, drainage enhancements, and tortoise fencing round out the scope.

This multi-month effort starts this spring and targets completion by year’s end. The upgrades address wear from heavy use while protecting local wildlife. Officials emphasized phased construction to minimize disruptions during peak travel periods.[1][2]

Navigating the Road Ahead for Valley Drivers

These initiatives promise fewer crashes, quicker incident responses, and prolonged infrastructure durability, though they will introduce temporary lane closures and overnight work. Commuters should anticipate periodic slowdowns, especially on I-11, as crews deploy sensors and repave surfaces. For updates, check the Nevada Department of Transportation site.

NDOT stressed coordination to limit rush-hour interference. The projects reflect broader investments in Southern Nevada’s growing transportation network.

Key Takeaways:

  • I-11 Tech Corridor deploys AI-like systems for real-time traffic control, starting this year.
  • Pavement work on I-11 enhances ramps and lighting for safer access.
  • U.S. 95 upgrades include wildlife protections alongside road repairs, finishing by December.

These developments underscore a commitment to modernizing Las Vegas Valley roadways amid rising demand. How will these changes affect your daily drive? Share your thoughts in the comments.
