Nevada – The Bureau of Land Management has initiated a public comment period on 14 nominated oil and gas parcels spanning more than 20,600 acres in the state’s northeastern region.[1][2]

A Step Toward Unlocking Federal Resources

The Bureau of Land Management controls the vast majority of Nevada’s land, including nearly all acreage in Clark County. This latest move highlights the agency’s focus on domestic energy production.[1]

Officials emphasized that leasing represents only the initial phase. Operators must later submit applications for permits to drill, undergo public review, environmental analysis, and coordination with state partners before any development occurs.[2]

All proposed parcels carry stipulations designed to safeguard natural resources. The process aligns with quarterly lease sales mandated by the Mineral Leasing Act.[3]

Focus on Elko District and Eureka County

The 14 parcels lie within the Elko District, specifically Eureka County. They total 20,600.11 acres and could feature in a competitive online auction on September 16.

Leases would last 10 years initially, extending as long as oil or gas produces in paying quantities. Nominations came through standard channels, with a preliminary list and maps available for review.

This scoping period allows early input before an environmental assessment advances. The BLM Nevada State Office oversees the effort.

Public Participation Opportunities

Stakeholders have until March 11 to submit comments on the preliminary parcel list. The 30-day window opened February 9.[2]

  • Mail: BLM, Attn. Kelly Michelsen, 3900 E. Idaho St., Elko, NV 89801
  • Fax: 775-753-0347
  • Email: BLM_NV_ELDO_TFO_Projects@blm.gov

Details, including parcel maps, appear on the BLM ePlanning site. Sales occur via the National Fluid Lease Sale System and EnergyNet platform.[2][3]

Nevada’s Active Lease Sale Calendar

Beyond this proposal, Nevada hosts four sales annually on a rotating district basis. A separate auction for 11 parcels totaling 19,957 acres in Nye County proceeds toward March 31, following completed scoping and a closed comment period.[1]

Expressions of interest arrived for every Nye parcel, with a protest window ending March 2. Recent sales, such as one in June 2025 from the Ely District, drew no protests after environmental reviews.[3]

Sale Date District/Parcels Status
March 31, 2026 Ely/Nye County (11) Protest period open
September 16, 2026 Elko (14) Scoping open
June 2026 Ely Scoping closed
Key Takeaways
  • 14 parcels cover 20,600 acres in Elko District; comments due March 11.
  • Leasing precedes rigorous permitting and environmental checks.
  • Nevada’s BLM sales rotate quarterly, prioritizing eligible federal lands.

Federal land management in Nevada balances resource development with protections, as these parcels demonstrate. The process invites broad input to shape outcomes. What aspects of this lease proposal interest you most? Share in the comments.
