Las Vegas – Authorities uncovered the bodies of a mother and her preteen daughter in a Rio Hotel & Casino room Sunday, determining the mother shot her child before taking her own life.[1][2]

Welfare Check Reveals Heartbreaking Scene

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a welfare check call around 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Rio Hotel & Casino, located west of the Strip. Hotel security assisted after repeated knocks and calls yielded no response from the room. Officers entered and found the two victims deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.[3]

The incident occurred sometime Saturday night, police stated during a briefing. Lt. Robert Price described the discovery as tragic. Investigators quickly classified the case as a murder-suicide. No other individuals appeared involved.[4]

Victims Traveled from Utah for Cheer Event

The mother, identified as Tawnia McGeehan in her mid-30s, and her daughter Addi Smith, a preteen cheerleader, hailed from Utah. They stayed at the hotel for a local cheer competition organized by Utah Xtreme Cheer. The cheer group reported them missing Sunday morning after they failed to appear at the event.[3][4]

Last sightings placed them at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino around 8 p.m. Saturday. A note discovered in the room provided further context, though authorities withheld its contents. The cheer community expressed shock over the loss of the young athlete and her mother.[5]

Police Outline Investigation Timeline

Here is a brief timeline of key events:

• Saturday evening: Mother and daughter last seen near New York-New York Hotel.
• Saturday night: Apparent shooting inside Rio room.
• Sunday morning: Cheer team reports them missing.
• 10:45 a.m. Sunday: Welfare check initiated at Rio.

Broader Implications for Family Tragedies

Officials emphasized the sensitivity of the case during their update. The Rio Hotel cooperated fully with the probe. Las Vegas police urged families facing crises to seek help through available resources. This event underscores the hidden struggles that can surface during routine trips.[7]

Investigators continue piecing together the lead-up, interviewing associates from Utah. Autopsies will confirm the exact cause and timing of death. The community now grapples with the sudden void left by the pair.

This devastating case serves as a stark reminder of mental health challenges that can overwhelm even joyful occasions like a cheer tournament. What are your thoughts on preventing such tragedies? Share in the comments below.
