In the heart of Uttar Pradesh’s typically sweltering May season, residents experienced an abrupt shift on May 4. Maximum temperatures across multiple cities plummeted well below seasonal norms, marking some of the lowest highs recorded for the month in history. This unusual cool spell provided a stark contrast to expectations of intensifying summer heat.

Cities Grapple with Unseasonably Low Highs

Several locations in Uttar Pradesh registered maximum temperatures that deviated significantly from normal. Aligarh saw a high of 29 degrees Celsius, 10 degrees below average. Bahraich followed closely at 29 degrees Celsius, with a departure of 8.8 degrees below normal.

Bareilly recorded 28.5 degrees Celsius, lagging 10.1 degrees behind typical May figures. Barabanki endured the most extreme drop at 26.5 degrees Celsius, 12.1 degrees below normal and the second-lowest maximum temperature for May on record. Such readings highlighted the breadth of the cool-down’s impact across the state.

Historical Lows Mark the Event’s Severity

Lucknow joined the list of outliers with a maximum of 29 degrees Celsius, 10.4 degrees below normal and the fourth-lowest May high in its historical data. This placed the capital city among the most affected areas in terms of deviation. The event underscored how far temperatures strayed from the month’s usual patterns.

Other cities like Etawah at 31.4 degrees Celsius, down 10.1 degrees, and Fursatganj at 30.3 degrees Celsius, 9.5 degrees below, reinforced the statewide trend. Even places with slightly milder drops, such as Shahjahanpur’s 27.8 degrees Celsius, 8.8 degrees below normal, contributed to the narrative of an atypical day. These figures painted a picture of uniformity in the chill.

Slightly Warmer Spots Amid the Chill

Not every location felt the full force of the drop equally. Hamirpur reached 34.2 degrees Celsius, 6.5 degrees below normal, while Jhansi hit 35.2 degrees Celsius, lagging 6.7 degrees. Kanpur recorded 36 degrees Celsius, with a more modest 4.5-degree shortfall.

Varanasi logged 35.6 degrees Celsius, 4.8 degrees below average, and Sultanpur saw 32.4 degrees Celsius, down 6.6 degrees. Muzaffarnagar and Meerut both hovered around 30 degrees Celsius, with departures of 6.8 and 7.9 degrees respectively. These relatively higher readings offered pockets of relief compared to the deeper plunges elsewhere, yet still signaled cooler-than-expected conditions.

What Drove the Sudden Shift?

While specific meteorological causes remained under observation, the uniform nature of the drops across Uttar Pradesh suggested broader atmospheric influences at play. Departures ranged from 4.5 to 12.1 degrees below normal, affecting urban centers and rural districts alike. Barabanki’s near-record low stood out as a benchmark for the event’s intensity.

Lucknow’s position in historical rankings added context to the anomaly. Residents accustomed to May’s relentless climb toward 40 degrees Celsius or higher found the respite noteworthy. Meteorologists likely scrutinized cloud cover, wind patterns, or passing weather systems to explain the deviation.

This cool interlude arrived at a time when heat typically dominates northern India’s plains. The data from May 4 offered a snapshot of variability in what promised to be a long summer season.

As Uttar Pradesh eases into the remainder of May, the memory of this temperature plunge lingers. Whether it signals a fleeting break or hints at shifting patterns remains to be seen, but the numbers from that day etched a distinctive mark in the state’s weather ledger.
