Movie sets are full of shortcuts. Doubles handle the stunts, editors hide the seams, and sound teams fix the rest. Some actors skip the shortcuts and put in months of real practice instead.
The twelve performers below picked up everything from conducting to dressmaking. Each one learned the skill well enough to be believable on camera.
Adrien Brody, Piano for The Pianist

Brody played Władysław Szpilman in Roman Polanski’s 2002 film. He took on intensive piano study so his hands and posture would look right when the character played Chopin.
The preparation was part of a wider, famously punishing commitment to the role. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and at 29 he was the youngest man to win in that category.
Natalie Portman, Ballet for Black Swan

Portman had danced as a child, but Darren Aronofsky’s film demanded far more. She trained in ballet for roughly a year before shooting, with long days of dance and conditioning.
The work paid off with a convincing look as a dancer, and she won the Oscar for Best Actress for the role. A dance double was still used for some of the most technical moves.
Daniel Day-Lewis, Dressmaking for Phantom Thread

For his role as a fashion designer in 1950s London, Day-Lewis learned to sew. He trained at the New York City Ballet’s costume workshop under its staff.
Reports from the production say he could reproduce a Balenciaga dress by the end. Phantom Thread was billed as his final film role, though he later returned to acting for a different project.
Mandy Patinkin, Fencing for The Princess Bride

Patinkin and Cary Elwes both trained for the film’s famous duel. The two studied with swordmaster Bob Anderson, who had also worked on major sword fighting films.
The scene required both actors to fence with either hand. Patinkin learned the choreography so well that the shots hold up decades later.
Keanu Reeves, Gun Fu for John Wick

Reeves spent months training for the first John Wick film in 2014. His lessons covered judo, jiu jitsu and tactical firearms handling, including work with professional trainers.
That preparation shows in the way the action is filmed, with long takes that keep the star in the frame. He has kept returning to the training for each sequel in the franchise.
Bradley Cooper, Conducting for Maestro

Cooper directed and starred as Leonard Bernstein in the 2023 Netflix film. He spent about six years learning to conduct, by his own account in interviews.

The effort paid off in a sequence filmed at Ely Cathedral in England, where he conducted a full orchestra. The film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Hilary Swank, Boxing for Million Dollar Baby

Swank trained for months to play a boxer in Clint Eastwood’s 2004 drama. She worked with a trainer and added muscle to look the part in the ring.
Her fight scenes feel physical because she actually learned the footwork and punches. The performance won her a second Academy Award for Best Actress.
Rami Malek, Piano and Movement for Bohemian Rhapsody

Malek took piano lessons before playing Freddie Mercury in the 2018 biopic. He also worked with a movement coach to capture the singer’s stage presence.
The singing in the film blends Mercury’s original recordings with other vocals. Malek’s physical work, though, helped sell the performance, and he won the Oscar for Best Actor.
Ryan Gosling, Piano for La La Land

Gosling played a jazz pianist in the 2016 musical and learned the instrument from scratch, according to the filmmakers. He trained for several months so that his playing could be shot in continuous takes.
Director Damien Chazelle wanted no hand double, which meant Gosling had to be believable at the keys. The film’s piano scenes show his actual hands.
Zendaya, Tennis for Challengers

Zendaya played a former tennis prodigy turned coach in Luca Guadagnino’s 2024 film. She trained with tennis coach Brad Gilbert to get the form and rhythm of the game right.
Her costars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist also prepared for the court. The results helped the matches feel like real play, not staged exchanges.
Austin Butler, Voice and Movement for Elvis

Butler spent years preparing for Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film about Elvis Presley. He worked with voice and movement coaches to learn how Presley sang, spoke and moved.
He performed much of the singing himself, blended with original recordings for some songs. The role earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Cate Blanchett, Piano, German and Conducting for Tár

Blanchett played a celebrated conductor in Todd Field’s 2022 drama. She learned piano and conducting, and she also studied German for scenes set in Berlin.
Her work in the film won her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. It also brought another Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
