Plenty of American stories never touched American soil while cameras rolled. Studios have long shot in Canada and elsewhere for tax incentives, crew depth, and flexible locations. The result is that some very familiar U.S. settings are really stand-ins.
Most viewers never notice, because the illusion works so well. Here are eight well known films where the setting on screen and the shooting location don’t match.
Brokeback Mountain

The story unfolds in Wyoming, and the title itself sounds like a real place in the American West. In fact, the production shot mainly in southern Alberta, Canada. The Canadian Rockies and the foothills near Fort Macleod and Kananaskis Country supplied the mountain scenery.
The look of open ranch land and high pastures suited the film’s quiet, wide angle style. Wyoming’s landscape is similar enough that few audiences questioned it. Alberta has since become a regular double for the American West.
Juno

Juno is set in Minnesota, and the suburban feel of the film seems to fit that Midwestern setting. It was actually filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. Locations in nearby suburbs such as Burnaby stood in for the small town backdrop.
Vancouver has a long record of playing generic American towns. Its neighborhoods, schools, and overcast skies blend into many U.S. settings without much dressing. That flexibility is a big reason the city is nicknamed Hollywood North.
Mean Girls

The 2004 comedy takes place at a suburban high school in Illinois, near Chicago. Production took place in the Toronto area instead. The school exterior used in the film is Etobicoke Collegiate Institute in Toronto’s west end.
Hallway scenes and local streets did the rest of the work. Small giveaways exist for sharp eyed viewers, though most people never catch them. The film’s American teen culture reads so clearly that the location rarely comes up.
Chicago

The Oscar winning musical is named for its city, yet much of it was shot in Toronto. Period architecture in Toronto doubled for the Chicago of the 1920s. Old City Hall was used for courthouse scenes, giving the trial sequences their stately look.

Toronto is also known for standing in for other cities, including New York. Its mix of older buildings and modern towers gives filmmakers plenty of options. Here, the stage-like musical numbers were built on sets that made the true location even less obvious.
The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy romance is set in Baltimore during the early 1960s. It was filmed in Ontario, mainly in Toronto and Hamilton. Hamilton’s historic theaters and streets helped create the period atmosphere.
The film won the Oscar for Best Picture. Its rich green and teal design came from sets and carefully chosen locations rather than from Maryland. Viewers who assumed Baltimore was on camera were seeing Canadian streets dressed for another era.
Deadpool

The Marvel antihero operates in a version of New York, and the film’s urban action seems to match. Production was based in the Vancouver area of British Columbia. Highways, warehouses, and city blocks there were used to create the American setting.
Much of the action was built around practical locations, including a stretch of highway for the opening sequence. Vancouver’s combination of studios and varied terrain makes it a favorite for superhero productions. The New York feel comes largely from editing, set dressing, and audience expectation.
The Revenant

This survival drama follows a frontiersman across the American wilderness in the 1820s, in territory that includes the Dakotas and Montana. Filming took place mostly in Canada, in Alberta and British Columbia. The crew later moved to the southern tip of Argentina to find snow when conditions in Canada turned warm.
The production relied heavily on natural light, which made location choices especially important. Rivers, forests, and snowfields came from places far from the story’s actual geography. Even so, the film feels rooted in the American frontier.
First Blood

The first Rambo film is set in a small town in Washington state. It was shot in British Columbia, with the town of Hope serving as the main location. Its mountains and forests suited the story of a veteran pursued through rough country.
Hope has since embraced its film history, and visitors can still find reminders of the production. Cold, wet woodland and small town streets gave the film its tense, isolated mood. Few viewers would guess from the screen that this was Canadian terrain.
