8 Artists Who Recorded Their Debut Albums as Teenagers

Most people spend their teenage years figuring out who they are. A handful of musicians did it on tape, with the whole world eventually listening.

The eight artists below all made their first full albums before turning twenty. Some were children, some were nearly adults, and each took a different road into the studio.

Billie Eilish released When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in March 2019, when she was seventeen. She made it with her brother Finneas O’Connell, largely in his small bedroom studio at their family home in Los Angeles.

The album’s hushed vocals and heavy low end sounded unlike most pop at the time. At the 2020 Grammy Awards she won the four biggest categories, including album of the year, and she was eighteen when she did it.

Taylor Swift’s eponymous debut arrived in October 2006, when she was sixteen. She had moved to Nashville as a young teenager and signed with Big Machine Records. She also co-wrote most of the songs on the record, which was unusual for a country newcomer her age.

The album included Tim McGraw and Our Song, and it spent a long run on the Billboard 200. It became the start of a catalog she has since re-recorded in part, which makes that first record a reference point for her whole career.

Ella Yelich-O’Connor, known as Lorde, released Pure Heroine in September 2013 at sixteen. She grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, and she worked on the album with the producer Joel Little. The sound was spare and minimal, built around her low, deliberate voice.

The single Royals reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which made her the first New Zealander to do so. The song later won the Grammy for song of the year, and the album’s subject was ordinary suburban teenage life, not glamour.

The Jackson 5

Michael Jackson was eleven when the group’s debut, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5, came out on Motown in late 1969. He was the youngest of the brothers in the lineup, and he sang lead. The record included the first single, I Want You Back, which had been recorded earlier that year.

Their first four singles for the label all reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a run Motown promoted heavily at the time. For many listeners, that early work remains the clearest picture of Michael Jackson’s talent before he became a solo star.

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo released Sour in May 2021, when she was eighteen. She wrote the songs with producer Dan Nigro, drawing on her own heartbreak and the loneliness she felt after a difficult stretch of her teens. She was already known as an actor on Disney productions, but the album pushed her into a different arena.

Sour debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and its lead single Drivers License was a worldwide hit. The album earned her several Grammy awards in 2022, including best new artist.

Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder, then known as Little Stevie Wonder, put out The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie in 1962, when he was twelve. He had signed to Motown a couple of years earlier after being noticed as a young prodigy who played harmonica, drums, and piano. That first release was mostly instrumental and did not make much of a commercial impact.

His breakthrough came soon after with a live recording called Recorded Live: The 12 Year Old Genius in 1963, which topped the Billboard 200. The early years at Motown laid the base for the run of landmark albums he made in the 1970s.

Aaliyah

Aaliyah was fifteen when Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number came out in May 1994. The album was made with R. Kelly, who wrote and produced most of it, and it blended R&B with the hip hop textures of the period. Her smooth, understated singing set her apart from many of her peers.

The record went on to sell over a million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum. Her follow up, One in a Million in 1996, with Timbaland and Missy Elliott, built on that start and shaped R&B in the years that followed.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne was seventeen when he released his first solo album, Tha Block Is Hot, in November 1999. He grew up in New Orleans and had signed with Cash Money Records as a young child, joining the group the Hot Boys along the way. The record was produced largely by Mannie Fresh, the label’s in house producer.

It debuted high on the Billboard 200 and was certified multiplatinum, giving the label a major release. For an artist who would later be one of the most prolific rappers of his generation, it was an early marker of how quickly he was working.
