6 Actors and Singers Who Announced Their Retirement and Later Returned to Work

Retirement announcements in entertainment often carry an unwritten asterisk. A farewell tour, a final album, or a quiet statement about stepping away can be sincere at the time and still fall short of permanent. Artists change, offers arrive, and the stage or set has a habit of pulling people back.

The six names below each said goodbye in some public form, whether to acting, to recording, or to touring. Each one later returned, though the reasons and the scale of the comeback vary quite a bit.

Sinatra publicly announced his retirement in 1971, at a concert in Los Angeles. He was in his mid fifties, and he had already spent several decades as one of the biggest names in American music and film.

The break didn’t last long. In 1973 he came back with a television special and an album, both titled Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back. He kept performing for roughly two more decades.

Jay-Z framed The Black Album, released in 2003, as his farewell to rapping. He marked the moment with a high profile concert at Madison Square Garden in New York that November. At the time, it was widely treated as the end of his run as a solo recording artist.

He did not stay away. He returned in 2006 with the album Kingdom Come, and he has kept releasing music since. His case shows how a retirement can work as a pause that reshapes a career.

Cher’s Living Proof Farewell Tour launched in 2002 and ran for several years, stretching into 2005. It was marketed as a goodbye to live touring, and it became one of the longest farewell runs in pop history.

She kept working all the same. She starred in the film Burlesque in 2010 and appeared in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018. She also released a Christmas album in 2023, and her memoir arrived in 2024.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Day-Lewis said he was done with acting after Phantom Thread, which came out in 2017. He is known for choosing roles rarely, and the announcement was taken seriously because his pace was already slow. For several years he stayed out of the public eye.

His return came with Anemone, a film directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and released in 2025. The project was a family collaboration, which helps explain why it was the one to draw him back. It was his first leading screen role in about eight years.

Ozzy Osbourne

In the early 1990s, Osbourne launched a tour billed as his farewell, with the slogan No More Tours attached to it. The message was clear enough that fans treated the dates as a last chance to see him.

He was back within a few years, releasing the album Ozzmosis in 1995. He also became a fixture of the touring festival Ozzfest. In July 2025 he played a final concert in Birmingham, England, with a long list of guests, and he died later that month.

Paul Simon

Simon announced in 2018 that he was retiring from touring, and he closed that run with a final show in New York. His wording was specific, since he spoke about leaving the road rather than leaving music altogether. That distinction mattered later.

In 2023 he released Seven Psalms, a new album that he described as a single continuous piece of music. A documentary about the album’s making, In Restless Dreams, also arrived that year. So while the touring goodbye held in its original form, his creative work clearly did not stop.
