Hollywood has always had a way of quietly closing doors without ever sending a formal notice. Calls stop coming in. Agents stop returning emails. A franchise role quietly gets recast. The word “blacklisted” rarely appears in any official press release, but the effect is the same – a career that once seemed bulletproof suddenly goes dark.
Some of the names on this list made headlines for genuinely troubling reasons. Others became caught in the industry’s shifting tolerance for controversy. A few are attempting slow, cautious comebacks; others seem to have accepted the silence. What they share is a story about how fast the machine can turn, and how difficult it is to reverse once it does.
1. Mel Gibson – The Long Shadow of 2006
Few falls from grace in Hollywood history have been as dramatic as Mel Gibson’s. Once Hollywood’s biggest movie star, whose film Braveheart won five Oscars and whose collective box office total reached 3.6 billion dollars, Gibson had not been directly employed by a major studio since The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004. The turning point came in July 2006, when Gibson was arrested for drunk driving and directed deeply antisemitic remarks at the arresting officer.
In 2010, when he was caught on tape going on a racist rant and making death threats against his ex, Oksana Grigorieva, any comeback became even less likely, and the talent agency William Morris Endeavor Entertainment dropped him as a client. Gibson’s controversial statements resulted in his being blacklisted in Hollywood for almost a decade. Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel publicly called for the entire entertainment industry to boycott Gibson, and actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly refused to star in films with him.
2. Ezra Miller – A Cascade That Hasn’t Fully Stopped
American actor Ezra Miller has remained largely out of the public eye since they starred as the lead in 2023’s The Flash following a series of arrests and allegations. Controversies surrounding Miller date back to 2020 and include assault, burglary, and alleged grooming of an 18-year-old. Warner and DC higher-ups reportedly decided not to cast Miller in any more films after The Flash, which proved to be a box office bomb. The DCEU was dismantled, and Miller hasn’t booked any new gigs since. In 2024, Prime Video fired Miller and recast their voice role in the animated series Invincible.
While it seems unfathomable that they will ever again reprise the role of the Flash, their relationship with distributor Warner Bros. Pictures also seems to be broken beyond repair. Moreover, given that Miller was never considered a box-office draw before The Flash, it’s hard to imagine that they will ever again be given a leading role in another Hollywood studio film. The 32-year-old reappeared at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and mentioned a potential return to Hollywood “on tentative grounds,” working on a film with director Lynne Ramsay.
3. Shia LaBeouf – Talented, Troubled, and Still Unresolved
After breaking out as a child actor in Holes and gaining fame on Disney Channel’s Even Stevens, Shia LaBeouf went on to headline major films like Fury, Indiana Jones, and the Transformers franchise. While his career brought blockbuster success, it was also marked by public controversies and legal drama, including a high-profile lawsuit with FKA Twigs that was settled out of court in 2025. In December 2020, LaBeouf was sued by his ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs for sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit also detailed allegations that he abused another ex-girlfriend, stylist Karolyn Pho.
The fortune has survived a 2025 settlement with FKA Twigs and a 2026 Mardi Gras battery arrest. His arrests – 2014 for disorderly conduct at a Broadway performance of Cabaret, 2017 for public intoxication in Savannah, and 2026 for battery in New Orleans where he allegedly struck at least two men outside a bar – describe an escalation that mirrors his father’s trajectory. That hasn’t fully stopped the former child star from working in Hollywood; LaBeouf was in three films last year alone, including the David Mamet-directed prison drama Henry Johnson, the British boxing flick Salvable, and Slauson Rec, a documentary chronicling the free experimental acting collective that Shia founded in 2018.
4. James Franco – Settled, But Not Forgotten
In October 2019, two former students of James Franco’s now-defunct acting school, Studio 4, claimed in a lawsuit that the acting school was a front for Franco to take sexual advantage of female students. In February 2021, Franco settled the lawsuit out of court for a reported $2.2 million. Moreover, in the aftermath of the announced settlement, Franco’s longtime collaborator Seth Rogen declared that he had no intention of ever working with Franco again.
Franco’s last major starring film role came in the 2016 comedy film Why Him?, while LaBeouf’s last leading starring role in a Hollywood studio film came in the 2012 crime drama Lawless. Franco appeared in 2024 in the French thriller The Price of Money: A Largo Winch Adventure. In May 2025, Deadline reported that Lionsgate’s partner Grindstone acquired U.S. distribution for the true-crime feature Golden State Killer, with Franco as the detective trying to catch a serial killer. His path back through the industry runs almost entirely through international productions and smaller distributors, a signal of how significantly his standing has shifted.
5. Katherine Heigl – The Cost of Speaking Out
From Knocked Up to 27 Dresses, Heigl made a name for herself as a leading love interest on screen, all while bringing to life Dr. Izzie Stevens on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. However, Heigl’s outspoken nature and criticism of her most well-known projects earned her a reputation in Hollywood for being difficult – one that, decades later, she was still struggling to shed. Her downfall accelerated in 2008 when she withdrew her own name from Emmy consideration, publicly stating that the writing on Grey’s Anatomy had not given her enough to work with. Writers and producers were not amused. She had also made headlines for criticizing the film Knocked Up, calling it a little sexist, even though she had starred in it.
Roles slowed, and her reputation as someone hard to work with spread through the industry. Heigl’s situation is often cited as a cautionary tale about the gap between how male and female actors are treated when they speak candidly about their working conditions. While male stars with far worse personal conduct have eventually found redemption, the “difficult” label stuck to her far longer than the facts seemed to warrant. Her arc remains one of Hollywood’s more complicated ones to untangle.
6. Melissa Barrera – Fired Within Days
The Hollywood powers that be took notice, and a month after her social media posts, she was fired from her lead role in Scream 7 and pushed out of her talent agency, WME. Spyglass, the production company behind the Scream films, issued a statement declaring zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form. The firing was extraordinarily swift, even by Hollywood standards, and it set off a wider debate about where the line falls between protected political speech and content that crosses into something more serious.
By the following year, Barrera was back in the horror landscape, appearing as Joey in the vampire flick Abigail and, in 2025, in the Peacock spy fiction series The Copenhagen Test. By 2026, she had moved to Broadway, starring in Titaníque, still openly discussing the professional cost of her firing. Barrera was blacklisted for some time, even going without a publicist after the fallout. Her trajectory is unusual in that she has been somewhat transparent about what she lost, and has continued building work on the edges of mainstream Hollywood.
7. Mo’Nique – Industry Freeze After a Major Win
Mo’Nique made it big when she starred in Precious in 2009. After the movie, though, she seemed to have been blacklisted from working in Hollywood. Apparently, she was extremely difficult to work with. What makes Mo’Nique’s story particularly striking is the timing: most actors experience the industry’s freeze after a string of failures, not immediately following an Oscar win. Her case raised pointed questions about how Black women are treated when they assert leverage in negotiations.
Director Lee Daniels confirmed that Mo’Nique had been blacklisted. Her demands through Precious were not always in line with the campaign, and this soured her relationship with the Hollywood community. Mo’Nique has spoken about the experience publicly and at length over the years, framing it as a systemic problem rather than a personal failing. Whatever the complete truth of the situation, her major studio work effectively ended at the highest point of her career, and she has never returned to that tier.
8. Justin Baldoni – From Director to Defendant
In December 2024, Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, accusing him of orchestrating a media smear campaign against her in retaliation for her complaints about sexual harassment on the set of It Ends With Us. Lively accused her co-star and director of creating a “hostile work environment.” She claimed he entered her trailer uninvited while she was undressed and pressured her to film intimate scenes that had not been previously discussed.
Months later, Baldoni countersued Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, for $400 million on claims of civil extortion, defamation, and invasion of privacy. His legal team accused the A-list couple of using their power to “destroy” his reputation. A judge tossed out Baldoni’s $400 million defamation claim, but the core case remains headed for trial in 2026. In 2025, Hollywood learned that behind-the-scenes drama now comes with subpoenas. Baldoni, who was considered a rising director-producer in Hollywood before the lawsuit, has not announced any new major projects since the legal filings began reshaping how the industry views him.
What makes all eight of these cases worth examining together is how differently the machinery of consequence works. Some reputations crack over a single incident. Others erode across years of accumulated behavior. A few of these actors are quietly rebuilding; others remain in a kind of professional limbo that no press tour or apology has managed to lift. Just as quickly as Hollywood awards fame, it can snatch it away. A controversial comment, being seen as difficult to work with, or public legal battles can quickly cause an actor’s career to come to a crashing halt – sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently. The permanent cases, it turns out, are harder to define than they first appear.
