Most animals in movies are never named in the credits. A dog might spend half a film on screen and still leave the theater without a mention. When a name does appear, it tells you something about how the filmmakers saw that performer.
The eight films below span more than a century of cinema. Some gave their animals a proper credit as part of a studio system, and others fought for it much more recently.
Hell’s Hinges (1916)

Start with a horse. Fritz was the first horse to be named in the credits as a costar to his rider, William S. Hart. That makes him an early example of an animal getting a credit of his own.
Fritz appeared in at least eight silent films, and Hell’s Hinges from 1916 is one of them. He even received his own fan mail, which often included sugar cubes from admirers. Credit and affection arrived together.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Toto is probably the most famous screen dog of the classic era. The dog behind him was a female Cairn Terrier named Terry. She appeared in many movies, most famously as Toto in The Wizard of Oz.
The credit was unusual for her career. It was her only role to receive a credit, and her name appeared as Toto. She was officially renamed Toto in 1942 because the movie was so popular.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

This one comes with a caveat. A dog named Darla appears in the film, and she also turns up in Batman Returns. Contributors on The Movie Database say she is credited in the end credits of Silence of the Lambs.
That claim comes from a community discussion, not an official studio source, so treat it with a little care. The same contributors point out that the dog is present in many of Buffalo Bill’s most famous scenes. It’s a small role that’s easy to miss on a first viewing.
Water for Elephants (2011)

Uggie was a trained Parson Russell Terrier, famous for his roles in Water for Elephants and The Artist. Before that, he’d worked in commercials and minor film parts. His first named role, and big break, was as Queenie in Water for Elephants.

The film starred Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, so Uggie was working alongside two big names. A named character, rather than a generic dog, marked a real step up in his career. Within the same year, he would land a much bigger part.
The Artist (2011)

The Artist was a silent film, and its dog became part of its identity. IMDb lists the role as The Dog, credited as Uggy. The spelling differs from his usual name, but it’s the same performer.
The movie won Academy Awards for Best Picture, lead actor and director. Uggie retired in 2012 and became the first dog to leave his paw prints in concrete at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
A Dog Named Palma (2021)

This Russian family drama is built around a dog. Palm, a shepherd dog, befriends Nicholas after being left at an airport. The film is inspired by the story of a shepherd dog named Palm, who was inadvertently left at the airport by her owner.
The IMDb cast list puts the title character Palma first, ahead of the human actors. Aleksandr Domogarov directed. The credit order reflects how central the dog is to the story.
Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

Messi is a French Border Collie, best known for his role as Snoop in the 2023 film Anatomy of a Fall. Snoop is a guide dog for a blind child, who almost dies from poisoning in a pivotal scene. Messi and his trainer Laura Martin trained for months to perfect playing dead.
The dog’s recognition went well beyond the credits. Messi won the Palm Dog Award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The film earned five Oscar nominations, and many felt the film’s MVP was short-changed on the big night.
Dog on Trial (2024)

This is the clearest modern case of a credit being demanded. Kodi plays Cosmos, the four legged companion of a visually impaired man, who ends up at the center of an absurd trial after a biting incident. Director and star Laetitia Dosch insisted on having Kodi credited as an actor in the film credits and on the poster.
Kodi won the Palm Dog prize for best canine performance at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. He was a rescue mutt, aged nine, and attended the event in person. He also gave a demonstration of the howl he had been trained to perform in the film.
