There’s a particular kind of confidence that comes from spending years falling off buildings, crashing cars, and getting lit on fire for a living. It turns out that confidence translates surprisingly well behind the camera. A number of Hollywood’s most recognizable action directors didn’t start in film school or as assistant directors. They started as the people studios called when someone needed to get hurt safely on camera, and somewhere along the way they picked up a camera themselves. The path from stunt work to directing isn’t new, but it has become far more common in the last two decades as action filmmaking has grown more technical and demanding. Below are eight performers whose stunt careers gave them the tools, and often the opportunity, to step into the director’s chair.

Chad Stahelski spent years as a stuntman and fight coordinator before becoming one of the most influential action directors working today. He was Keanu Reeves’ stunt double on The Matrix trilogy, which built a friendship and creative partnership that later proved essential when he pitched a small assassin thriller called John Wick.

That 2014 film, co-directed with David Leitch though credited solely to Stahelski, reshaped modern action cinema with its emphasis on long takes and precise choreography. Stahelski has since directed every subsequent John Wick film, turning the franchise into one of the most financially successful action series of the last decade.

David Leitch worked as a stunt double for actors including Brad Pitt for years, building a reputation as one of the industry’s most reliable coordinators before moving into directing alongside Stahelski on the original John Wick. He then struck out on his own with Atomic Blonde in 2017, a spy thriller built around a now famous single-take stairwell fight sequence.

Leitch went on to direct Deadpool 2, Hobbs and Shaw, Bullet Train, and 2024’s The Fall Guy, a film that doubled as a loving tribute to the stunt profession itself. His filmography reads like a case study in how physical choreography knowledge can shape an entire directing style, favoring clarity and geography over rapid editing.

J.J. Perry built a decades-long career as a stunt coordinator and second unit director on films including the John Wick and Fast and Furious franchises before making his feature directing debut. In movies ranging from F9: The Fast Saga to John Wick to Blade and beyond, Perry worked as a stunt coordinator and later as a second unit director, cutting his teeth alongside Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, stuntmen who also became Hollywood directors.

His directorial debut came with 2022’s Day Shift, a vampire hunter action comedy starring Jamie Foxx that premiered on Netflix. After directing Day Shift in 2022, Perry was announced in May 2023 to direct a film adaptation of Jay Bonansinga’s novel The Killer’s Game, and in 2024 was announced to direct an adaptation of the Red 5 Comics graphic novel Afterburn. Perry has spoken openly about how years of coordinating chaotic action sequences prepared him for the demands of running a full production.

4. Hal Needham

Hal Needham remains one of the clearest examples of a stuntman becoming a full-fledged commercial filmmaker. He became America’s highest paid stuntman, working nonstop in television shows like Have Gun, Will Travel and in over 90 feature films. As the highest paid stuntman in the world, Needham broke 56 bones, his back twice, punctured a lung and knocked out a few teeth, working across 4,500 television episodes and 310 feature films as a stuntman, stunt coordinator, second unit director, and eventually director.

His friendship with Burt Reynolds made it possible for Needham to make his directing debut in 1977 with Smokey and the Bandit, a comic car chase movie that cost four million dollars to make and grossed three hundred million dollars. Reynolds and Needham reteamed for Hooper in 1978, Smokey and the Bandit II in 1980, and The Cannonball Run in 1982. Needham later received an honorary Academy Award recognizing his contributions to stunt work and filmmaking.

Victor Monroe Armstrong is a British film director, stunt coordinator, second unit director, and stunt double, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s most prolific stunt performer. He doubled for Harrison Ford across the Indiana Jones films and for multiple James Bond actors, building a reputation as one of the most versatile stunt professionals of his generation.

In 1993, Armstrong made his directorial debut with the action film Joshua Tree, also known as Army of One, starring Dolph Lundgren, George Segal, Kristian Alfonso, and Ken Foree. He later returned to second unit and action directing work on major productions, including serving as opening scene director on Terminator 2 and contributing action sequences to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series decades later.

6. Yakima Canutt

Long before modern stunt coordinators existed as a formal job title, Yakima Canutt was inventing the profession from scratch. Canutt worked on more than 200 films between 1915 and 1975, developing numerous stunt techniques and technologies that later became ubiquitous throughout the industry. In 1966, he was given a special Academy Award for creating the profession of stuntman as it exists today and for developing many safety devices used by stuntmen everywhere.

Canutt graduated from stuntman for the stars to second unit director, staging action scenes for directors including John Ford on Stagecoach, William Wellman, Raoul Walsh, and Howard Hawks, as well as spectacles like Ben-Hur, Spartacus, and El Cid. He later staged the famous chariot race sequence in 1959’s Ben Hur, cementing his reputation as an action director rather than simply a performer. His influence on how action is staged and shot still shapes filmmaking technique today.

7. Isaac Florentine

Isaac Florentine trained extensively in martial arts before moving into stunt and fight choreography work in both Israeli and American film industries. He built a reputation for tightly constructed, karate influenced fight sequences that distinguished his work from more chaotic Western action editing styles.

Florentine transitioned into directing low budget and mid budget action films, becoming known for movies like Undisputed II and III and several entries in the Ninja and Power Rangers franchises. His directing career has largely stayed within the direct to video action space, but within that niche he is widely respected for choreography that prioritizes clarity and physical skill over rapid cutting.

8. Corey Yuen

Corey Yuen came up through Hong Kong’s Peking Opera School tradition alongside performers like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, training that produced some of the most technically demanding stunt work of the era. He worked as a stunt performer and action choreographer on numerous Hong Kong productions before moving into directing.

Yuen co-directed the American film The Transporter in 2002 alongside Louis Leterrier, blending his martial arts choreography background with Western action filmmaking sensibilities. He also directed So Close and choreographed action for major Hollywood productions including Kiss of the Dragon and Lethal Weapon 4, becoming one of the key figures who helped introduce Hong Kong style fight choreography to American audiences.

The throughline connecting all eight of these careers is fairly simple. Understanding how a stunt actually works, where the camera needs to be, how a fall should look, what makes an audience believe danger is real, gives a director an instinct that’s difficult to teach in film school. Not every stunt performer who picks up a camera becomes Chad Stahelski or Hal Needham, but the ones who do tend to bring something distinct to action filmmaking that comes only from having done the falling themselves.
