5 Memoirs by Musicians Praised by Literary Critics

Plenty of musicians have written books, and most of them read like extended liner notes. A smaller group has produced memoirs that book critics treat as real literature, with attention paid to structure, voice and the quality of the sentences.

The five below come from very different corners of rock, punk and folk. What they share is a writer’s discipline, and a reception that went well beyond the music press.

Published in 2010, Just Kids tells the story of Patti Smith’s friendship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in New York during the late 1960s and 1970s. It follows two young artists who share cheap rooms, odd jobs and ambitions before either has any recognition. The book is as much about apprenticeship as it is about fame.

The literary establishment took notice. Just Kids won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2010, an honor rarely given to a rock musician. Smith, who had published poetry long before, writes in a clear and unhurried prose that suits the subject.

Dylan’s 2004 memoir is deliberately uneven. It jumps between his arrival in New York in the early 1960s, the making of the 1989 album Oh Mercy in New Orleans, and other moments that don’t sit in tidy order. He skips much of what fans might expect, including long stretches of his most famous years.

Critics read this as a feature rather than a flaw. The book was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in autobiography and stayed on bestseller lists for a long time. Dylan received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, and many readers point to Chronicles as evidence of his prose talent.

Springsteen’s 2016 memoir covers his Catholic childhood in Freehold, New Jersey, his early bands, and the long climb to stadium fame. It also deals openly with depression and with a complicated relationship with his father. Those passages give the book weight beyond the usual rock biography.

Reviewers repeatedly noted that the voice sounds like Springsteen’s lyrics, with detail, rhythm and a sense of place. He wrote it over several years himself, without a ghostwriter, and it became a major bestseller on publication. The book later fed into his one man Broadway show, which drew on the same material.

Kim Gordon, bassist and co-founder of Sonic Youth, published Girl in a Band in 2015. She writes about growing up in California and Hong Kong, moving to New York, and building a band inside the downtown art world. The book also covers the end of her marriage to bandmate Thurston Moore.

Critics praised its cool, precise tone and its refusal to turn private pain into spectacle. Gordon came from visual art and criticism, and it shows in how she describes scenes and people. For many readers it became a defining account of a woman working in a male dominated rock scene.

Viv Albertine played guitar in the pioneering British punk band The Slits, and her 2014 memoir covers that period with unusual candor. It moves from London in the 1970s through the band’s breakup, a long career detour, illness, and her return to music. The structure is looser than a standard rock story, and the frankness is the point.

British reviewers singled out the writing itself, calling attention to its directness and dry humor. The book is often cited as a model of how a musician’s memoir can focus on ordinary struggles as well as fame. It also gave punk history a perspective that had been missing from earlier, mostly male accounts.
